The Office of First Year Programs & Learning Communities (FYP&LC) offers a menu of programs designed to assist students with their transition to college as well as aid in their persistence, success, and retention at the University of Connecticut. The Learning Community Program provides cohorts of students with opportunities to investigate areas of interest through faculty-led courses and co-curricular activities. Learning Communities offer a small college feel on a large campus; they promote meaningful and sustained interactions with faculty, staff, and student leaders; and they provide an effective structure for curricular coherence, deeper learning, student success, persistence, and engagement. The incumbent, under the direction of the designated administrator in FYP&LC, will coordinate the day-to-day administrative activities of the program as well as provide program support.

Duties and Responsibilities include but are not limited to providing programmatic coordination for departmental initiatives; managing all tasks associated with planning, coordinating, developing, implementing, managing and recruiting individuals to participate in numerous events, conferences, seminars, workshops, programs, activities, field trips, alternative break trips, study abroad trips, meetings, and so forth; contributes to student recruitment, marketing, and promotional efforts, and tasks associated with the development, implementation and growth of new and existing Learning Communities or other FYP&LC programs; maintains calendar(s); manages space reservations; delivers presentations and prepares newsletters, brochures, letters; compiles data and information and prepares or contributes to report generation; and responds to program inquiries explaining policies and procedures, and making referrals as needed, while ensuring the highest level of customer service.

Incumbent in this position maintains budgets, monitors spending and manages Learning Community funding proposals; processes paperwork for purchases and accounts payable; participates in recruitment, selection, and/or training of Learning Community Resident Assistants, floor mentors, or others who work with Learning Communities; manages or assists with searches; maintains websites and contributes to social media; coordinates hiring and training of student employees, student leadership positions, and may advise student groups; leads FYE (first year experience) courses; advises UConn Connects students; maintains constructive, professional, and positive work relationships as well as a positive, professional, and helpful demeanor; responsible for leading or assisting with projects based on evolving department needs; and participates and assists with events and activities requiring occasional evening or weekend hours.

Minimum Qualifications

  1. Bachelor's degree in an appropriate field to program.
  2. Three or more years related experience.
  3. Experience coordinating, planning, and executing events, workshops, etc.
  4. Excellent organizational skills and ability to manage multiple short- and long-term projects.
  5. Ability to work independently, to solve problems, and to approach challenges in a flexible and/or creative way.
  6. Advanced written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  7. Knowledge of, and ability to learn and effectively apply technology as a means to communicate, manage and share information and present material, including working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs such as Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  8. Ability and willingness to work irregular and flexible hours.
  9. Ability and willingness to foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of the University of Connecticut's diverse student body and encourages collaboration with and among campus constituencies.

Preferred Qualifications
  1. Master's degree in an appropriate field.
  2. Experience working in higher education.
  3. Ability to advise, guide, and work with students and program partners or collaborators.
  4. Experience in website design and maintenance in platforms such as Wordpress.
  5. Experience utilizing social media as a marketing and communications tool.
  6. Experience using KFS or similar financial records management system.
  7. Knowledge of budgeting, financial data processing, financial reporting and/or reconciliations.
  8. Demonstrated desktop publishing and/or design skills.

Appointment Terms

This is a full-time, permanent 12-month position. Salary will be commensurate with successful candidate's qualifications and experience. A comprehensive benefits package is included.
