About The Unit:

Unit Job Summary: The Contracts Manager is responsible for administering and coordinating awards, incoming subawards, clinical trial agreements, and data use agreements, for support of research, training, and other sponsored activities at The University of Chicago. The external funding to the University is provided by various sources - federal; non-profit; for-profit, including foreign entities. The primary focus for this Contracts Manager position will be reviewing and negotiating Clinical Trial Agreements and Data Use Agreements as well as the occasional non-profit award. The individual in this position is responsible for non-financial post-award activities. The individual is a member of a Team and must contribute to the team effort, as needed. This might involve assisting colleagues to ensure timely campus service and the assumption of additional responsibilities. This position requires rapid proficiency in the AURA-GRANTS web-application system. Incumbents are expected to review and process awards, data use agreements, and clinical trial agreements within AURA GRANTS. The individual in this position has contact with individuals at companies and institutions regarding a variety of agreement/contract types; the individual has contact with faculty and administrative staff at the University; and on occasions with staff of the federal government, non-federal sponsors and other organizations.

Unit Education: Bachelor's degree required

Unit Experience: A minimum of two years of grant and/or contract experience required. Proficiency with spreadsheet and word processing software required. Preferred qualifications: 1) Experience with sponsored research administration especially electronic, in university environment 2) Experience working with sponsored research administration in an academic environment. 3) Some legal or paralegal work experience 4) Experience with clinical trial agreements and data use agreements 5) Familiar with human subjects research and the regulations pertaining thereto including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act ("HIPAA"). Essential Functions: (60%) Negotiates acceptable terms and conditions in accordance with the specific primary funding sponsors' provisions, University's policies applicable to sponsored projects; partner institution's/organization's input; input from the University's principal investigators, administrators and central administration. (10%) Monitor post-award activities, such as requests for supplemental funding; requests for extension of the period of performance for sponsored projects; obtaining sponsor approvals for major changes to project workscope or major changes to anticipated expenditures, etc. (10%) Confirm appropriate evidence of approvals that commitments made in proposals can be honored, to help protect the University from harm and potential claims that might arise against the University from work done under a sponsored agreement. Maintain protocol information in AURA records as appropriate to the specific agreement needs. Maintains AURA record with fully executed agreements and other internal documentation. (10%) Assist colleagues during high volume periods, vacations, and as needed (10%) Attend meetings; contribute to overall assessment and improvement of office operations. Responds to routine requests from units of the University.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Ability to work with various sponsor electronic systems required. Rapid proficiency in the AURA-GRANTS web-application system required. Strong computer skills including word processing database management, and spreadsheet skills required.
