Due to the growth of the University, the Police Department is also expanding.
Please note that there are multiple openings for the Police Sergeant position.

The Police Sergeant supervises and directs University police officers, security guards, and others engaged in the protection and safeguarding of human lives and personal and public property for the UNT Dallas Police Department.

The duties of this position include the supervision and responsibility for on-the-job training and orientation of newly
hired officers. The exercise of independent judgment is expected within the limits of the provisions of traffic, civil and criminal law, University rules and regulations, and Police Department policies.

The Police Sergeant may be assigned supervisory and/or administrative activities within a variety of police operations; including, patrol, criminal investigations, training, satellite locations, accreditation, administration, or other equivalent duties and responsibilities as determined by the Chief of Police consistent with department and university policies. Employees in this class are working supervisors and may perform duties the same or similar to their subordinates during the course of the workday.

Responsibilities of the position include, but are not limited to:
  • Supervises University police officer's arid other employees as assigned by accompanying them on assignments, reviewing activity reports, and observing job performance and personal appearance.
  • May investigate complaints about the conduct of officers, and may discipline a subordinate for minor infractions of departmental rules, policies and regulations.
  • Conducts on-the-job training, familiarization and orientation of officers in all phases of their work.
  • Constantly analyzes, evaluates and attempts to improve the performance of subordinates.
  • Supervises the assignment of officers to shifts and secures adequate police protection by day and by night.
  • Assists in recruiting needed officers; interviews applicants and conducts employment investigations of potential University employees.
  • Plans work schedules; reviews and approves reports; and keeps subordinates informed of changes in departmental policies and regulations.
  • Prepares reports, files, and documentation consistent with department and university policies.
  • Assigns, monitors, and evaluates subordinate activities involving latent investigations of criminal complaints.
  • Supervises, schedules, and monitors officer training and compliance with TCOLE, department, and university requirements. * Observes safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed and work supervised.

Minimum Qualifications
The successful candidate will possess three years of police experience including raining; Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE). Basic Police Officer License; meet all minimum requirements UNT Dallas Police Officer classification description; work performance which meets or exceeds acceptable performance standards based upon current and prior year performance evaluations; and possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Thorough knowledge of traffic, civil and criminal law, City ordinances, and all University rules and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of modem principles, practices, equipment, and techniques of police administration, organization, and operation.
  • Ability to plan, organize, direct, and coordinate the work of subordinates.
  • Ability to understand and execute oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to effectively communicate oral and written instructions to subordinates.
  • Ability to effectively take command and act in a calm and effective manner in emergency and disaster situations.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with subordinates, other law enforcement groups, and the general public.

Preferred Qualifications
The preferred candidate will possess the following additional qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.
  • A minimum of one year with UNT Dallas Police Department; another higher education police department; or equivalent police agency.
  • Intermediate Licensure as a Police Officer from TCOLE.
  • Basic Police Instructor License from TOLE.
  • Specialized experience, licenses or certifications in investigations, training, accreditation, administration or other applicable areas related to areas of assignment.
  • Exercise good judgment and to utilize tact and courtesy when working with the public under frequently stressful. Conditions.
  • Able to react quickly and effectively under emergency (high stress) situations.
  • Demonstrate professional demeanor and excellent oral communication skills.
  • Ability to formulate effective solutions to problem situations in accordance with statutes, regulations, and training
  • Knowledge of safety and security precautions appropriate to work performed.
  • Lateral entry incumbents must be either currently employed as a police officer in Texas or other state or federal jurisdiction acceptable to the university or have less than a twelve (12) month break in service.

Physical requirements necessary to perform essential job functions
Work requires some muscular exertion and/or physical strain such as standing for long periods of time, recurring bending, or recurring lifting of items weighing up to 25 pounds.
