Responsibilities:

The International Student & Scholar Advisor advises students and scholars in F-1 and J-1 non-immigrant status in the area of immigration regulations and SEVIS procedures specifically related to training and employment. Offers guidance to departments and key contacts on regulatory requirements, institutional policies and OGS protocols. Manages the processing, data collection, and informational components as required by Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Works in tandem with other employment team advisors on employment and training related issues for international students: reviews and processes co-op authorizations; processes I-9s and e-verify for F-1 CPT and J-1 AT; advisees regarding obtaining SSNs; communicates with Co-op Advisors and students as needed. Keeps abreast of federal regulations governing all aspects of Curricular Practical Training (CPT) and Academic Training (AT). Serves as part of the OGS team in ensuring university compliance with federal regulations and represents the OGS at pertinent events. In addition, as part of the OGS team, the International Student & Scholar Advisor collaborates with students, scholars, and other offices at Northeastern to enhance the international character of the university.

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree required, preferably in a field related to international education, social sciences, or humanities. Master’s degree is strongly preferred. Also required: knowledge of immigration regulations pertaining to J-1 international students/scholars and F-1 international students; experience with I-9 processing and e-verify; minimum 3 years of experience in international students and scholars office. Knowledge of SEVIS RTI procedures is essential. Ability to multitask required, as are excellent verbal and written communication skills, excellent analytical and decision-making skills, ability to work independently and as a team member. Capable of working well with students, OGS team, and other university departments, and understanding of university structure and policy. Familiarity with batching systems highly preferred. Prior study/work abroad or other living experience overseas is helpful, along with knowledge of a second or third language. Strong intercultural communication and interpersonal skills, highly developed organizational abilities and systems management experience crucial. US citizenship or permanent residency required.
