BACKGROUND
As part of the Facilities Management Department, Duke Utility & Engineering Services (DUES) includes the following operating units that provide the full range of utility & engineering services to the Duke Campus and Medical Center: Chilled Water, Steam, Electric Systems, Water (including water, sewer, and storm water), Energy Management and Engineering. The Energy Management unit is responsible for energy-efficient building and central plants operations and promotes energy conservation practices throughout the University. This position reports to Energy Manager.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Manage the building control systems for University's High Performance Buildings and critical systems. Responsibilities include monitoring building controls systems, control system alarm management, performance monitoring, reliability implementation, programming, project design and execution, procedure development, training, problem solving, and system documentation. Their goal is to ensure all high performance buildings and critical systems are performing optimally and within specification.
Typical Duties
Monitor HVAC systems with building automation systems to troubleshoot operational problems and optimize building performance

Develop & Lead daily evaluations and tuning of real time controls systems operations

Work with current team members to implement energy efficiency analytics/ automated fault-detection and diagnostic program

Work with current team members in the operational transition from Siemens Insight to Siemens Desigo BAS platform

Work closely with the Facility Operations group to assure the building systems are being maintained properly and systems working optimally.

Analyze control system issues and direct HVAC shop on problem resolution

Stay abreast of the latest technology environment and develops strategies for system improvements and enhancements

Develop & Analyze daily reports to assure the systems are running optimally and make recommendations for improvements

Oversee and approve external consulting engineers on the layout and design of all control systems in new construction and renovations

Alarm management for the building automation system

Team with other engineering disciplines to ensure projects and systems are operating within the required guidelines

Develop and update University documentation to provide guidelines for future project planning, design, construction and maintenance and ensure the implementation of these standards

Assist in developing control system training programs for control operators and HVAC shop personnel

Implement control logic and control source code when necessary

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described herein

Education

Work requires a Bachelor's degree in a specific engineering field related to construction (e.g. Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering) and eligibility for North Carolina licensure as an Engineer.

Experience

Work requires a minimum of three years experience in design, planning, evaluation and project management related to new construction and renovation of buildings and/or systems. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS

Education and Experience
B.S. degree (ME, EE, or equivalent) preferred and 10 years of experience or an equivalent combination of relevant education and/or experience skills.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Good knowledge of building energy systems
  • Proficient with Siemens Apogee controls and programming
  • Experience in the controls and instrumentation for buildings and laboratories
  • Ability to analyze existing controls systems with applicable monitoring equipment to troubleshoot and resolve problems
  • Ability to create and maintain positive customer and stakeholder relationships.
  • Microsoft Office skills including Word, Excel and PowerPoint
