The University of Virginia Facilities Management department offers a Landscape career path that affords landscape educational opportunities for employees within Facilities Management.
The Landscape & Grounds Worker demonstrates an exceptional level of landscaping service in assigned areas through safe work practices while using proper landscaping techniques. Employee maintains good working relationships with customers, staff, students and supervisors. Employee has special project work as assigned. Employee gains increasing efficiency with landscaping techniques, supplies and equipment while moving through the Career Path Stages.
All employees hired into the Landscape & Grounds Worker position will begin in Stage 1 and progress through the Career Path to Stage 4. Candidates must meet the minimum qualifications at the Stage 1 level to be hired.

This employee will be exposed to different temperatures due to outside work. They will be exposed to noise from working around and with machinery and exposed to contaminants and chemicals due to the use of fuel and landscape fertilizers, etc.
This employee will be required to stand, walk, and lift above and below the waist various weights which may include different landscape equipment and materials. The use of both hands and a repetitive motion will be required while pruning, driving, weeding, and pushing lawn mowers.
NOTE: All shifts are Monday-Friday but some will be 6AM-2:30PM and some will be 7:00AM - 3:30PM. Applicants should be available to work either shift.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
All employees will be hired at Stage 1.
In order to progress to higher levels within the position, an employee must successfully complete the required knowledge, skills and abilities of the current stage and each previous stage.
Employee will enter the position with the ability to perform basic grounds maintenance / landscape installation experience.
Ability to interact with others by understanding the principles of:
1. Remembering information including instructions, names and faces; 2. Listening to and understanding directions, questions; 3. Being a public representative of an organization; and 4. Always cognizant for the safety of oneself and others.
