The School of Business is seeking a full-time Academic Programs Technologist (Computer Technical Support Consultant 1, UCP 4) to work in its Information Technology Department. The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated individual who demonstrates a high-level of technical potential and can work independently with limited day-to-day supervision. The incumbent will report to the Service Delivery Manager and will provide technology support services, consultation and timely execution of job duties and tasks related to supporting faculty, staff, students and classrooms in the School of Business at the Graduate Business Learning Center in downtown Hartford and the Connecticut Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation. This position will provide on-site service delivery for facilities and academic classrooms and provide support for network connectivity, multimedia, workstation repair and teleconferencing (printer maintenance, wireless network support, application issue resolution, hardware upgrades, software installation and virus elimination). The incumbent will also have a significant role in supporting instructional technology-based classrooms, including online and distance learning (DL) classrooms and other facilities featuring client-facing technology, i.e. video conferencing, projection systems, learning management systems, collaboration technologies, research labs, and other applied technology solutions relating to the academic needs of the School of Business. The Academic Programs Technologist will also provide guidance, solutions and training for faculty, staff and students in support of teaching, research and outreach activities. Special projects may also be assigned based on departmental needs.

The position will be based at the Graduate Business Learning Center (GBLC) in downtown Hartford, but may require travel to other UConn campuses including the Storrs, Waterbury and Stamford campuses. Evening and weekend hours, including regular Saturday hours, will also be required.

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, communications, business or related field or equivalent combination of education and training.
  • One or more years of experience in computer technical support.
  • Considerable knowledge of desktop applications including MS Office and Outlook.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of computer equipment, networking and standard operating software.
  • Demonstrated experience with video conferencing and distance education software such as Microsoft Skype, WebEx and Polycom Bridge hardware.
  • Experience maintaining and repairing A/V and/or instructional hardware and software.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills including the ability to bridge the gap between technical and non-technical languages.
  • Demonstrated ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Ability to prioritize, multitask and meet tight deadlines within a task-based and project management framework and team setting.
  • Ability to work calmly and effectively under pressure and tight timelines in a self-driven environment.
  • Willingness and ability to work frequent evening and weekend hours.
  • Willingness and ability to regularly travel in-state to other University and/or School of Business locations.

  • Experience working in higher education or in an academically-focused technology environment.
  • Knowledge of information technology management and issues in a university setting.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills with demonstrated ability to establish and build cooperative working relationships with others.
  • Experience in teaching, training, conducting workshops and providing presentations to various levels of technical abilities.
  • Experience with the following concepts: networking, TCP/IP, virtualization, SAN, replication, disaster recovery.
  • Experience with the following products: Avaya or Cisco Network equipment, Dell servers, EqualLogic SANs, Office 365, VMWare, Windows Server 2003/2008/2008 R2.
  • Prior experience managing student workers in a technical environment.
