Job Summary:

The primary responsibility of a police sergeant is line supervision and administration of programs. This position is under the general supervision of a Police Lieutenant. This position is responsible for the safety and security, on all University properties, of all staff, students and the general public. This position is responsible for implementing all departmental written directives and meeting established goals. This position is responsible for leading, directing, supervising, and training all Department personnel. This position works independently on matters of resource allocation, investigative management, scheduling of department personnel, recruitment, hiring and onboarding of personnel, crime prevention programs, delivery of law enforcement services and daily administrative assignments.

Police sergeants are assigned to an operational area of the Department. While individual assignments may require special training, any police sergeant must be capable of serving and may serve in any or all of the assignment areas. Each police sergeant may also be assigned as the back up to another sergeant's assigned operational area. While focused on a particular operational area there are specific responsibilities, duties and knowledge required; however, the general abilities and responsibilities such as leadership, problem solving, planning, communication, and law enforcement service apply to each specific area. Operational areas may include patrol and security services, special events, investigations, training, emergency management, access control and infrastructure security. Operational areas may change depending changes in organization structure and/or operational focus. Each police sergeant is expected to be able to learn whichever operational area assigned as well as how that area interacts and impacts other operational areas.

Police sergeants have responsibilities for providing supervisory reports regarding the currently assigned operational area; ensuring compliance with mandates affecting the assigned area; leading, managing and supervising the assigned area; establishing goals for the operational area; creating and communicating written directives and guidelines; creating and engaging and inclusive work environment; responding to and managing incidents, events and emergencies; providing leadership department-wide; planning and preparation for incidents, events and emergencies; building relationships with staff, key partners, other entities and the community; and providing for the safety and security of the campus.

Schedule Comment:

This position is considered an essential position for the University Campus. The final schedule worked will be discussed and agreed upon with UWPD management. Most assigned areas have a Monday-Friday schedule during general business hours; however work hours will need to meet the needs of the UWPD. Routinely persons in this position will be required to work beyond or outside hours agreed upon may be required during emergencies, special events or as assigned.

*Describe your experience & training with managing critical incidents and major events. List events (e.g. community events, sporting events, protests, etc.) and incidents including size, scope and role you held. List of specific Incident Command System/National Incident Management System or similar training you have sucessfully completed and number of hours of each training. List exercises (table top, functional, full scale, etc.) you have participated in including type, size and scope, length of time of the exercise and your role in the exericse.
