The University of Miami, Miller School of Medicine, Department of Cell Biology has an exciting career opportunity for an Assistant Chair. The Department of Cell Biology at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine is dedicated to excellence and innovation in research and education of research scientists and physicians. The current research programs in the department focus on basic questions in Cell and Developmental Biology that are relevant to medically important problems. The department is composed of 19 primary faculty and 16 secondary faculty who collaborate with scientists from other departments, schools and centers. The department is also home for the administration of the graduate program in Molecular Cell and Developmental Biology, an interdepartmental program that includes faculty from many other basic science and clinical departments and confers Ph.D. degrees.
The Assistant Chair for Basic Sciences is responsible for the overall administration of the Department. He/she has oversight in the areas of research administration, finance, faculty recruitment support, facilities, internal communication, training, and personnel. He/she assists Chair in managing the overall operations of the Department and acts on behalf of the Chairman in dealing with the faculty and the various business and administrative offices of the University of Miami.

The role of the Assistant Chair is to provide administrative leadership and structure for the Department of Cell Biology and to assist the Chair in identifying the necessary resources and implementing new programs to carry out the mission of the department at the University of Miami. The specific functions are categorized as follows: business and financial management, education and training, strategic planning and evaluation, research administration (pre and post award), departmental activities, and extramural relationships.

The minimum qualifications for this position are as follows: Bachelor's Degree in Business, Finance, Accounting or a closely related field of study as well as at least seven years of work experience involving the management of fiscal operations, training and performance management and strategic planning. Knowledge of business and management principles involved in strategic planning, resource allocation, human resources modeling, leadership techniques, production methods and coordination of people and resources. Ability to work successfully and efficiently while under pressure and with tight deadlines with limited resources and multiple competing priorities. Excellent problem solving skills and the ability to identify opportunities to improve processes and leverage the time of the faculty and staff. Flexible and able to multi-task as well as the ability to work within an ambiguous, fast-moving environment, demonstrated resourcefulness in setting priorities. Superior leadership skills and experience, particularly in cultivating a high-performing team, and in developing and maintaining excellent relations with staff at all levels. Demonstrated skills in effective communication, both verbal and written, interpersonal skills, leadership, and conflict resolution. Strong financial management skills in order to identify opportunities to improve operating efficiencies and effectively control expenses. Substantial experience in budgeting, preparing financial reports and financial analysis. Extensive experience with grant management is strongly preferred. Experience with computer applications including Microsoft Office Suite to include Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook. Strong ability to pay close attention to detail. Any relevant education, certifications and/or work experience may be considered.
