Position Summary

Manages the personnel and operational activities of the MSU Sailing Center located in Haslett, Michigan. The primary activities are instructional sailing and paddle sport classes, daily equipment rentals, membership services and miscellaneous special event programs. This position requires significant interaction with MSU students, faculty, staff and public customers during instruction, membership sales and other uses of the facility; good communication and relationship building skills are needed with other university units, public organizations, businesses and vendors in order to promote the programs and activities of the Sailing Center. Responsibilities include maintaining the facility in a safe manner and implementing safe instructional classes and programs. This position may include working in inclement working conditions; requires various walking, lifting, and boating and water sports activities; first level supervision of all student employees of the Sailing Center. This position reports to the Associate Director of Recreational Sports and Fitness Services.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Business, Communication, Advertising, Sports Management, or related field; three to five years of related and progressively more responsible work experience in athletic facility management, programming and marketing, and experience in supervising and training staff in a customer service environment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Desired Qualifications

Certification in CPR/AED; small craft instructor certification and prior experience in boat and equipment repair; or relevant experience in a related outdoor adventure business or operation; valid vehicle operator’s license; knowledge of basic personal computer technology, Windows, MS Office, email and internet; ability to prepare syllabi and course design for teaching KIN credit classes; may require certification in a related sports area, on going membership(s) in professional organization(s) related to the specific recreational sport; and professional level competitive experience in the specific recreational sport.

Work Hours

VARIABLE

June-September 12:00pm-9:00pm including some weekends and Holidays. October-May 8:00am-5:00pm Monday-Friday. Administrative Office at IM West on campus of Michigan State University. MSU Sailing Center location is 5918 Shaw Street, Haslett, MI.
