Network Engineer I

Position Summary

The Network Engineer I is responsible for activities related to the design, implementation, support, and maintenance of network information systems supporting the activities of MSU. The Network Engineer is responsible for the documentation, communication of system and related components, and coordination within the team. The Network Engineer I will be responsible for troubleshooting network incidents and solving complex technical issues solo or with team members; will be able to complete network configuration moves/adds/changes with little to no supervision; provides high quality customer service and support; demonstrates the ability to prioritize and completes many tasks in a ticket-based work environment. This position will be part of an on-call support rotation.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

Knowledge equivalent to that which normally would be acquired by completing a four-year college degree program in Computer Science, Information Systems, Business or related information technology field, with coursework in an information technology specialization related to the area of employment; one to three years of related and progressively more responsible or expansive work experience in an information technology area related to the duties to be performed; working knowledge of logical and physical networks and related stem technology; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Possession of a valid vehicle operator's license. 

Desired Qualifications

Strong troubleshooting skills to isolate network faults utilizing packet sniffers, enterprise network analysis tools and other available information; ability to design solutions and resolve problems with layers 1-7 of the network stack; in-depth understanding of networking protocols, routing protocols, optical networking and security technologies; technical Network Certifications such as CCNA, JNCIA, etc.
