The Stanford Cyber Initiative is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time one-year fixed-term Social Science Research Professional 3 position with the possibility of renewal.

The Stanford Cyber Initiative is a central hub at Stanford University for policy-relevant research across disciplines to address the opportunities and challenges raised by cyber technologies in society.

The Stanford Cyber Initiative studies the interactions between cyber technologies and society and associated policy issues. Cyber technologies encompass networked digital technologies - notably, the internet - and extend to embedded digital structures and devices that facilitate, enhance and scale human endeavors. The Cyber Initiative's interdisciplinary research, combining the social sciences with computer science and engineering, yields a superior policy framework with which to address immediate cyber threats and challenges, enhance the social gains from technical innovation, and head off longer-term emergent flaws.

The Cyber Initiative is seeking a researcher to produce original research and writing on policy-relevant issues that arise from the study of computer security, with a particular focus on either labor and the workforce, financial systems and risk, democracy, internet governance, or the tension between individual security and state security. Assist in organizing educational events for a policy audience and support administration and growth of the Stanford Cyber Initiative.

Perform work to support research or develop public programs and policies requiring a high degree of scientific knowledge. Supervise and train less experienced colleagues and provide consultation.


  • Assist principal investigators with designing work product constituting a phase of a research project for which precedents are few.
  • Independently identify/modify standard procedures based on judgment concerning the general goals of a project; select approaches in developing, testing, and evaluating new methods.
  • Lead or participate in multidisciplinary teams (in academia, across different faculties or schools, and in industry, across different functions of the business).
  • Co-author all or sections of a report for publication or professional presentation with the work being reviewed by the principal investigator or faculty.
  • Present ongoing work and findings to colleagues at academic conferences.
  • Collaborate with the principal investigator to design a research approach of a project and/or integrate results of the entire project.
  • Complete project-related administrative and budgetary responsibilities of a limited scope as needed.
  • Formally supervise and train new staff or students, including hiring, performance management, and related duties, in addition to instruction on techniques and consultation on project work.

Additional Core Duties:

  • Organize and plan educational events for a policy audience, both at Stanford and in Washington, DC.
  • Assist with organizing and executing meetings and conferences, including coordinating with other institutions on campus or visiting academics and government officials.

Education & Experience:

Graduate degree in law, political science, history, the physical sciences, engineering, computer science, or a related field, and five years of applicable experience, or combination of education and relevant experience in an applicable social science. In-depth experience and interest in cybersecurity and public policy strongly preferred.

  • Ability to work under deadlines with general guidance.
  • Excellent organizational skills and demonstrated ability to complete detailed work accurately.
  • Demonstrated oral and written communication skills.
  • Supervisory skills.


  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, use a telephone, writing by hand, and sort/file paperwork or parts.
  • Rarely twist/bend/stoop/squat, kneel/crawl, rarely reach/work above shoulders, operate foot and/or hand controls.
