Residential & Dining Enterprises (R&DE), the largest auxiliary organization at Stanford University, supports the academic mission of the University by providing the highest quality services to students and other members of the university community. The Department has an annual operating budget of over $270 million, oversees a 5 million sq. ft. physical plant across the campus, and provides housing for over 13,000 students and dependents, serves over 18,000 daily meals at 30 dining and retail locations and over 300,000 meals at Athletic Concessions events, and hosts 20,000 conference guests annually. Additionally, R&DE comprises 735 FTE staff in the following divisions: the Office of the Senior Associate Vice Provost, Student Housing, Stanford Dining, Stanford Hospitality & Auxiliaries, Stanford Conferences, and a team of R&DE strategic business partners: Finance & Administration, Human Resources, Information Technology and Communications.

Under the general direction of the Associate Director for Housing Maintenance and Security, the Project Crew team reports to the Manager, Carpentry, Project Crew and Field Operations. Project Crew team members perform building maintenance services and provide light-industrial assistance to the Stanford Residential and Dining Enterprises community.

Major responsibilities include:

Maintenance and Minor Repairs:

  • Install, replace, clean shower heads, aerators, drain plugs, faucet washers
  • Unclog sinks, toilets
  • Tighten screws, hinges, door hardware
  • Perform emergency clean-up work including removal of standing water, toilet overflows, storm drain catch basin clearing
  • Replace ceiling tiles.
  • Perform preventive maintenance work as directed
  • Maintain vehicles, material handling and moving equipment
  • Perform window covering repairs / replacements including blinds, drapery rods and hardware, roller shades
  • Replace electrical outlet and wall switch covers, light fixture pull chains, electrical cords, plugs


  • Replace lamps adhering to proper lamp type and color index for each application
  • Clean, replace light covers, diffusers
  • Promptly refer lighting outages involving more than lamp failure to proper shop


  • Correctly install repair paper towel/soap dispensers, toilet seats, blinds, shades, drapes, signs, room numbers, door stops, door and drawer pulls, window latches and screens, hangers and hooks to walls and ceilings, bulleting/white/black boards, hang pictures, bookshelves
  • Uses appropriate fasteners and proper installation methods for items being installed and materials on which installations are being performed
  • Demonstrates a high level of workmanship in installations including proper leveling, spacing, centering, installing at correct heights
  • Performs installations with minimal impact to adjacent surfaces
  • Removes all unused fasteners, adhesives, other items related to old installations
  • Patches surfaces, prior mounting holes using appropriate materials and methods
  • Install and change security devices such as key blocks


  • Assemble, install, repair, reconfigure student room furniture
  • Assembles, installs, reconfigures modular office furniture

    Distribution Services:

  • Distributes goods to and from salvage, storage, surplus, and central receiving
  • Adheres to inventory control policies
  • Keeps accurate records
  • Operates a forklift

    Moving Services:

  • Relocate, store, deliver, and dispose of furniture, appliances, abandoned student property, any other property designated by supervisor
  • Moves furniture, appliances, and equipment
  • Moves computers and electronic equipment as directed
  • Moves art objects and displays
  • Exercises care in protecting property being moved including careful handling of items, proper use of moving blankets, correct usage of moving equipment, and properly securing loads
  • Exercises care and proper methods to protect walls, floors, adjacent surfaces in moving and placement of furniture, appliances, other items

    Event Support:

  • Properly transports, sets-up, and removes seating, tables, and equipment for special events

    Summer Conference Support:

  • Provide support for summer conference programs as directed
  • Performs program-related special needs
  • Support the linen program as directed

    Other Tasks:

  • Report supplies needed or repairs required on equipment/vehicles
  • Participate in training of new or seasonal employees
  • May assist in grounds maintenance/construction operations

  • Promptly performs assigned work orders in accordance with department priorities
  • Performs work utilizing methods and materials approved by supervisor
  • Maintains work areas, buildings, and equipment in accordance with department standards
  • Contributes to maintaining a safe and productive environment free of harassment and hostile behavior
  • Operates power tools in a safe manner following safe work practices
  • Correctly maintains, stores, secures equipment at all times
  • Wears University-provided work clothing in accordance with department standards; maintains a clean and presentable appearance
  • Demonstrates good attendance, neatness, punctuality, accuracy, and personal hygiene
  • Correctly utilizes personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Coordinates projects with client customers
  • Demonstrates ability to originate constructive and appropriate action to achieve results.
  • Maintains a service attitude and approach to students and other customers; demonstrates sensitivities to individuals with differing abilities; shows cultural awareness
  • Follows all protocols established for working in student spaces, including leaving notification cards indicating presence within residence while performing work.
  • Willingly responds to changes in procedures, processes and assignments, priorities
  • Submits follow-up work orders when appropriate/required
  • Demonstrates respect for residents', co-workers' privacy and property
  • Demonstrates good stewardship of university property, resources, avoids waste, damage to buildings, equipment, vehicles
  • Follows department procedures for hazardous waste management and handling, lockout tag out procedures, practices for safe handling and correct usage of chemicals, and related procedures
  • Promptly reports inappropriate use of chemicals and/or unsafe equipment
  • Performs work in accordance with the Injury and Illness Prevention Program, Confined Space procedures
  • Practices effective time management accomplishing work within appropriate time frames
  • Leaves work place safe, neat, and clean after each task is performed; follows up with Building Manager when custodial support is required
  • Performs assigned duties in a manner that contributes to customer satisfaction and confidence in the services provided

    Work Locations:

  • Performs work within all areas of Residential and Dining Enterprises supports University Partners as requested

  • Performs work in occupied spaces requiring courtesy and sensitivity to occupants, protection of existing surfaces, equipment

  • Performs work outdoors including in inclement weather

    Tools and Equipment used:

  • Hand tools including wrenches, sockets, levels, tape measures, screwdrivers, plungers, hand augers, related items

  • Step and extension ladders, work platforms, scaffolding, lift equipment

  • Power tools including electric drills, saws, metal cutters, grinders

  • Pneumatic tools including nail guns, staplers

  • Power equipment including blowers, pressure washers, similar items

  • Moving equipment including appliance trucks, hand trucks, dollies, carts, similar items

  • Material handling equipment including forklifts, pallet jacks, power lift gates on trucks, related items

  • Various other types of maintenance related equipment.

    Physical Requirements to Perform Essential Job Functions:

  • This position is considered moderately to highly physical, and requires standing, bending, lifting and walking throughout the majority of the shift. Approximately 95% of time is spent standing, walking or moving around work area, and approximately 5% of time is spent working at a desk, or sitting.
  • Ability to perform work safely from various ladders and lifts
  • Lift, move heavy materials (up to 50 pounds) frequently each day
  • Work overhead, kneel, stoop, stand, crawl, climb, or sit for long periods of time
  • Perform work in all types of weather using appropriate PPE
  • Respond to emergency calls nights, weekends, and holidays
  • Willing to work variable shifts nights, weekends, holidays

    Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • High level of knowledge and skills in the methods, practices, materials, and applications used in the performance of maintenance and moving work performed within this job classification
  • Ability to take accurate measurements, level, center, mount items on a wall with equal spacing
  • Knowledge of the proper use and application of hand and power tools related to the performance of building maintenance work; has the ability to operate power tools following safe work practices; promptly reports safety concerns to supervisor
  • Knowledge of correct furniture and equipment moving methods and practices that ensure safe moves without damage to facilities, vehicles, or items being moved
  • Ability to operate a two-way radio for communication
  • Good written and oral communication skills in English; ability to follow directions, communicate effectively, and cooperate with co-workers, students, other departments, and management on a daily basis
  • Ability to think and act effectively; originate constructive and appropriate action to achieve desired results.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team; ability to motivate self and to work professionally, cooperatively, supportively with co-workers; does own full share of work, readily offers others assistance when needed

    Qualifications - Required:

  • Minimum of 2 years work experience in performing building maintenance and repair tasks

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED)

  • Must be able to understand, speak, read/write, and take direction in the English language.

  • Excellent customer service skills

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of tools, materials, methods used in the performance of building maintenance work

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of hardware, fasteners, correct methods and materials for mounting, attachment, installation of items

  • Knowledge and skills in performing lighting maintenance

  • Knowledge and skills in moving and materials handling methods and practices; proper and safe use of moving and materials handling tools and equipment

  • Willingness and ability to ascend/descend stairs and/or ladder, push and pull, bend, stoop, lift, load and carry at least 50 pounds frequently

  • Successful ability to respond to rapidly changing priorities

  • Willingness to work variable shifts (at night or on weekends), overtime and work in various locations.

  • Valid California driver's license

  • Ability to safely drive, maneuver in close quarters large box vans, flat bed trucks, similar vehicles all within the Class C license requirement

    Qualifications - Preferred:

    • Experience with student room furniture assembly, repair, reconfiguration
    • Experience in performing moving service
    • Certified fork lift operator
    • Completion of a training program in building maintenance methods and practices
    • Completion of a training in moving methods and practices
    • Familiarity with the use of handheld devices (PDA's) in a building maintenance / work order environment
    • Work experience in a university environment with an understanding of the requirements and constraints inherent in student housing operations
