The Stanford School of Medicine Anesthesia Informatics and Media Lab (AIM) includes projects that span education, clinical informatics, and mobile computing in medicine. The goal of the AIM Lab is to focus on innovative user-centered solutions to healthcare IT. The Lab's work has been honored by funding and awards from the Agency for Healthcare Research Quality, IARS, Society for Technology in Anesthesia, and Medicine 2.0, among others. A key program at the AIM Lab is STARTprep, an extension of the AIM Lab's successful START program. START - Successful Transition to Anesthesia Residency Training is a year-long program during internship designed to help incoming residents feel more prepared to begin anesthesia residency training. STARTprep, takes up where START ends. It is a one-year curriculum designed to provide CA-1 residents with competency in the anesthesia basic sciences. The Instructional Designer (Academic Technology Specialist) facilitates the integration of technology into teaching, learning, and/or research activities. The incumbent in the position is responsible for developing instructional courses for the AIM Lab programs, including establishing content for multi-institutional blended and online learning programs. The Instructional Designer handles the lecture capture of multiple courses, seminars, and creates online versions from Stanford courses and lectures. Provides written content for online courses, performs editing functions for courses and workshops. Recommends learning platforms and mobile apps to achieve educational design plans.
Duties include:

  • Determine multimedia, online, and educational technology needs for instructors and/or students, and provide or coordinate solutions. Provide assistance in the direct integration of technology into course curricula, extra-curricular or co-curricular learning, and/or research projects.
  • Develop relationships with service providers throughout the university to advocate needs and obtain resources for faculty and students.
  • Participate in the development of resources, seminars, courses, or workshops to disseminate information about uses of technology.
  • Recommend software, hardware, and multimedia equipment.
  • Assess training needs; develop and deliver workshops and user-friendly documentation.
  • Participate in or lead projects to develop innovative uses of technology for research, student learning, and/or community building.
  • Engage in initiatives to encourage faculty and/or students to adopt the use of appropriate computer technologies in their teaching, learning, co-curricular activities, or research.
  • Provide outreach and advocacy within or across departments for effective uses of educational technology.
  • Stay informed about educational technology developments through lists, publications, and conferences.

  • Familiarity with Moodle Course Management System, OpenEdX and WordPress
  • Demonstrated skill in using web and media based technologies for education such as, but not limited to, Flash Professional, Camtasia, Goodledocs, Voicethread, Adobe Creative Suites, HTML, HTML5 CSS, and JavaScript
  • Curiosity about and commitment to learning cutting edge technologies for support of education online
  • Ability to work with and train in both a PC and Macintosh environment
  • Knowledge of educational applications of social media
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Ability to work collaboratively and in a positive manner with others
  • Intermediate skill in the use of MOOC platforms
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED): Bachelor's degree plus two years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Current knowledge of the latest software and design standards.
  • Ability to define and solve logical problems for technical applications.
  • Knowledge of and ability to select, adapt and effectively use a variety of programming methods.
  • Ability to plan, design, develop, and evaluate engaging multimedia learning/training objects.
  • Knowledge of instructional design methodologies, pedagogical issues, and best practices for classroom, online and hybrid learning.
  • Strong knowledge of learning management systems and various classroom and online learning technologies.
  • Ability to recognize and recommend necessary changes in user and/or operations procedures.
  • Basic knowledge of software engineering principles.
  • Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks.
  • Frequently sitting, grasp lightly/fine manipulation.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh 11-20 pounds.
  • Rarely writing by hand, use a telephone
