Summary of Position:
Working as part of a growing team in the Student Success Center. Student Success Advisors provide program services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position them for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. Student Success Advisors will work with diverse caseloads, including students that are on campus in a traditional model, at distance, in a hybrid model and students that are solely online. Additionally, Student Success Advisors collaborate with faculty advisors in every phase of the student life cycle. Student Success Advisors will advise students on: various university and program resources, time management resources and progam benchmarks. With a campus mandatory advising model, Student Success Advisors work consistently with their assigned advisees, but also with prospective and continuing undergraduate and graduate students. Student Success Advisors rely heavily on significant use of communication via phone, video conference, email, and other forms of communication, therefore Student Success Advisors are self-starters, quick learners and are motivated by working in a collaborative environment.
The successful candidate must (1) hold a Master’s Degree in higher education or related area OR hold a master’s degree with at least 3 years of related work experience with a university or college setting; (2) possess strong communication, interpersonal, organizational skills as well as demonstrated professionalism in effective judgment and professional integrity; (3) have the ability to manage time effectively in a busy environment; (4) have a demonstrated commitment to and execution in customer service; (5) have experience with and a passion for working with students from diverse backgrounds in both face-to-face and distance/online environments; (6) ability to utilize and learn various advising and software applications, learning platforms, Microsoft Office Suite, and technology-based delivery systems; and, (7) be knowledgeable of best practices and theoretical foundations in the field of adult learning, student development, supplemental instruction, advising, and student services, as well as, all relevant federal, state, and local laws, university regulations, and programs/policies required for compliance.
Preference will be given to applicants who (1) have demonstrated experience of effectively working in a matrix organization; (2) have experience working with students in health and human services majors and fields; (3) have experience with assessment of programs and services; (4) have at least one year experience working exclusively with an online student population and/or online advising model; and (5) possess a proven track record for effective advising, coaching and communication skills within a diverse student population.
Primary Function of Organizational Unit:
The Student Success Center in the College of Health and Human Services (CHHS) at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) works to develop and provide programs and services for students, staff, and faculty that foster excellence in the student experience at UNCW and position students for success as they continue in their chosen career paths. The center houses caring individuals who are passionate about and dedicated to helping students identify and achieve their educational and career goals. The Student Success Center works collaboratively with other units across campus (e.g., the Career Center, University College, etc.) to: (a) provide academic advising; (b) support program recruitment and admissions; © provide major, career, and graduate school guidance; (d) support internship, clinical, and field placement for students; (e) perform student assessment, monitoring, and reporting; (f) develop other services and programs that will foster student and alumni success. The Student Success Center acts as an “accelerator network” and supports campus wide and college services and programs, and thus Student Success Advisors must possess the skillsets, ability and flexibility to be successful in a changing, fast-paced academic environment.
The College of Health and Human Services was created in July 2010 to provide UNCW with a new mechanism to link and focus its health-related research, professional continuing education, and health knowledge dissemination and application. In the formative stage of development, the CHHS is currently home to three professional schools: School of Health and Applied Human Sciences, School of Nursing, and School of Social Work.
