General Statement:

Upward Bound Program: Canada College Upward Bound is a TRIO pre-college program supporting high school students in the communities of North Fair Oaks and East Palo Alto, CA. TRIO Upward Bound prepares low-income and first-generation students to become leaders in their community and successful college students. The program provides academic support, including tutoring, mentorship, and informational workshops to successfully graduate from high school and obtain the necessary skills to complete a college degree. In addition, students participate in a 6-week summer program on the Canada College campus. This assignment is for the summer session.
Starting on June 12, 2017- July 28, 2017 (9:00 am-3:00 pm daily)
No benefits, approximately 25 hours per week

Minimum Qualifications:

1. A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in the applicable designated subject area and work experience of increasing responsibility, preferably in a classroom or laboratory setting, which has included teaching or tutoring high school or college students.
2. Demonstrated skills in respectful, sensitive communication with people of diverse cultures, language groups and abilities
3. Skill in oral communication, including public speaking
4. Skill in written communication
5. Skill in multi-tasking, prioritizing workloads, and working independently
6. Skill in the use of a variety of computer software to prepare correspondence and reports
7. Skill in setting up and maintaining online and manual files

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to work effectively with high school students and supervise them in a classroom or laboratory.
2. Ability to support students and work effectively with students that demonstrate diverse learning styles.
3. Skill in clear and direct oral communication, including public speaking
4. Skill in establishing and maintaining respectful, sensitive communication and working relationships with people at all levels within an organization who are diverse in their cultures, language groups, and abilities
6. Skill in performing routine research within a designated subject matter area
7. Skill designing lesson plans using original research and subject matter knowledge for a high school population

Preferred Qualifications: • Prior experience working with youth in an educational environment is highly desirable • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License (or the ability to obtain one)
