Business and Circulation Manager

The Business and Circulation Manager works closely with the Managing Editor and Editor-in-Chief. The role can be broken into three parts: business reporting, fundraising, and sales.
Business Reporting: The Business and Circulation Manager is responsible for the day-to-day bookkeeping of the journal, communicating with the Finance Department at Emerson College in order to pay invoices and keep accurate records of spending and revenue. The Business and Circulation Manager is also charged with maintaining circulation data, creating regular reports on subscribers, in addition to creating regular expense and revenue reports, to assist the Managing Editor in strategizing circulation initiatives to support the growth and maintenance of circulation revenue. This includes maintaining a subscriber list and interfacing with list brokers to rent our list to other media outlets as well as the routine analysis of subscriber source, payment, and demographic data.
Fundraising: Fundraising is also a large part of this role, including an annual giving campaign, cultivation of small donors, and assisting the Managing Editor in planning donor events.
Sales: The Business and Circulation Manager is responsible for meeting ad revenue targets set by the Managing Editor, working with past and potential advertisers to sell online, print, and audio ads and packages. In addition, the Business and Circulation Manager is responsible for building out a new program to license the Ploughshares custom CRM to other media outlets.

Required Knowledge:
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience, excellent attention to detail, knowledge of accounting fundamentals, excellent communication skills, excellent organizational and follow-up skills, diligent adherence to deadlines, experience with mailed fundraising campaigns, experience in donor prospecting and cultivation, experience managing a budget

Preferred/Desirable Knowledge:
Familiarity with publishing industry desired but not required

Job Duties:
