Summary of Position

The Associate Dean for Residential and Pre-Major Advising works closely with the other members of the senior management team in Undergraduate Advising & Research (UAR) to provide strategy, vision and direction for providing advising resources to Stanford undergraduates. The Associate Dean directly oversees the direction and development of the Academic Advising Director program, a residentially-based advising program designed to provide comprehensive academic advising to undeclared students, as well as some advising services to declared students. This position has three direct reports, who in turn supervise the work of ten Academic Advising Directors. Direct reports include two Lead Academic Advising Directors, as well as the Director of Pre-Major Advising, who oversees a volunteer advising program for undeclared students. The Associate Dean serves as a liaison between UAR's advising programs and schools, departments and other campus partners and also serves as a member of various boards on the university level, including the Academic Progress Review Board.

Core Duties
  • Manage the work of managers and other employees, processes, and projects, to implement the strategic goals of the unit. Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels.
  • Identify, clarify, and resolve complex issues with university-wide scope and impact and substantial significance, which may span multiple areas, using advanced technical and professional knowledge requiring broad discretion and judgment.
  • Provide strategic direction for and manage two major areas, Residential Advising and Pre-Major Advising, which includes forecasting, planning, and managing program budgets of $50,000 and $70,000, respectively.
  • Develop, analyze, measure effectiveness and oversee programs and tools for delivery of student services or programs, such as the Academic Advising Directors and Pre-Major Advising programs.
  • Review exceptions to university, program or unit policies and procedures, settle grievances. Make recommendations that may impact the unit's academic capabilities.
  • May manage the direction of internal academic and administrative policy development for programs and operations. May serve as senior advisor to the Associate Vice Provost on programmatic and policy development.
  • Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with university, academic and administrative policies within UAR. Recommend new internal policies, guidelines and procedures. Direct process improvement for programs within UAR.
  • Develop long-range planning and policy development for the academic advising programs.
  • Represent UAR programs and initiatives at senior level meetings, conferences, and to both internal and external constituents.
  • Evaluate and recommend the technological needs and effectiveness for delivery of student programs and services, specifically related to Advisor Portal and assessment of advising services
  • Identify, manage relationships, and negotiate with external and internal partners.

  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in higher education (including teaching and research) strongly preferred. Advanced degree strongly preferred. Ph.D. preferred.
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong analytical skills to review and analyze complex financial information.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience managing people.
  • Understanding of underlying technological needs and requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
