The Hoover Institution at Stanford University is seeking qualified candidates for a full-time position of Regional Director of Major Gifts based in the Bay Area.

The Hoover Institution within Stanford University is a public policy research center devoted to advanced study of politics, economics, and political economy - both domestic and foreign - as well as international affairs. Today, with its world-renowned group of scholars and ongoing programs of policy-oriented research, the Hoover Institution puts its accumulated knowledge to work as a prominent contributor to the world marketplace of ideas defining a free society.

More than 90% of the Hoover Institution's gift support comes from individuals and their foundations. With a current membership of about 110, the Board of Overseers provides 60% of the gifts each year on average, with another 30% provided by the current 400-plus members of the Hoover Council. An active schedule of events featuring Hoover Fellows and other speakers on public policy issues is offered through the Hoover Development Office to promote new relationships and strengthen current relationships.

JOB PURPOSE:

The Regional Director of Major Gifts (the "Director") will serve as a highly visible, knowledgeable, and articulate representative of the Hoover Institution in the Bay Area, providing information about its public policy activities and its role in developing and communicating the ideas defining a free society, with the objective of building and cultivating relationships that will produce gifts to the Institution. The Regional Director reports to the Director of Major Gifts and will be responsible for planning and implementing solicitation plans and strategies that will generate financial support for the Hoover Institution and its priorities. In addition, the Regional Director will work closely with the Director of Development as well as the Director of the Hoover Institution and other senior colleagues to identify, develop, and effectively market programmatic efforts that advance Hoover's research and policy objectives, including developing the funding sources for such efforts.

CORE DUTIES*:
  • Play a vital role in overall fundraising efforts.
  • Develop solicitation goals, objectives, and strategies for development projects and/or specific donor populations or geographic regions. Cultivate and solicit gifts to the Hoover Institution.
  • Manage an active portfolio, and track solicitation assignments and progress. Work with a portfolio of assigned prospects to cultivate, solicit, and steward their support.
  • Develop and design systems to track solicitation assignments and progress.
  • Develop relationships leading to gifts up to $10,000,000 and above.
  • Maintain productive contact with current donors to enhance their personal relationship with the Hoover Institution and its activities, with particular attention given to members of the Board of Overseers and the Hoover Council. Lead a wide range of fundraising activities, including providing stewardship, identifying new prospective donors and volunteers, maintaining an active level of contacts, coordinating volunteer fundraising efforts at the Hoover Institution, and facilitating relationships between potential and current donors and volunteers.
  • Lead staff to advance university relationships and solicitations, work with key prospects and donors to identify development opportunities within the Hoover Institution, and devise strategies for involving and soliciting external constituencies.
  • Establish ongoing relationships with individual donors and prospects through personal visits, phone calls, and meaningful contacts.
  • Prioritize prospects, prepare background information, make volunteer assignments as appropriate, and follow up with volunteers to ensure completion of assigned solicitations.
  • Work closely with other colleagues in development to align program goals with the overall giving goals of the university's development organization.
*Other duties may also be assigned. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Education & Experience:

Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience required. Advanced degree preferred.

Relevant experience may include: Involvement in marketing, finance or another role in which developing personal relationships and crafting persuasive communications are essential.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Advanced ability with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Demonstrated effectiveness in prospect identification, relationship building, and solicitation.
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring and working with volunteers, faculty, and staff.
  • Superior written and oral communication skills, with exceptional attention to detail and the ability to articulate a compelling case for philanthropic support programs.
  • Ability to translate complex concepts into compelling development proposals.
  • Ability to work effectively with faculty, top executives, and community leaders.
Certifications and Licenses:

Valid Non-Commercial Class California Driver's License.
STRONGLY PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to motivate donors, prospects, colleagues, and volunteers to act for the benefit of Hoover and its mission.
  • Ability to relate personally to Hoover's constituency, most of who are accomplished, often self-made, individuals who have the time and inclination to follow policy issues avidly.
  • Possess an understanding and sensitivity to the academic values of an education and research organization.
  • Knowledgeable about the national economy, business strategies and activities, governmental actions and proposals, and developments in public policy.
  • Demonstrated ability to conceptualize, develop, market, and implement strategies for achieving established and measurable objectives.
  • Work independently with limited oversight and direction, as well as serve as a trusted and helpful colleague to others in doing development and program development work for the Hoover Institution.
  • Ability to anticipate issues and responses, evidence a proven ability to manage complex problems independently and effectively, and work both directly and through others to accomplish results.
  • Possess high levels of energy, initiative, creativity, drive, and discretion in addition to a sense of humor.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:
  • Frequently perform desk-based computer tasks, sit, and use a telephone, stand/walk.
  • Occasionally light/fine grasping, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds, writing by hand.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a Non-commercial Class driver's license.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • May require working flexible hours, including nights and weekends. Regular and frequent travel required.
