Summary of Duties:
The Department of Veterinary Microbiology and Pathology seeks a full-time Scientific Assistant to join a research laboratory studying mechanisms of immune evasion and pathogenesis by Borrelia burgdorferi, the causative agent of Lyme disease. The Scientific Assistant will assist in the identification and definition of research problems as well as collect, analyze and interpret research data. The position will conduct experiments, prepare media and solutions, and perform general laboratory maintenance. Other duties include: assessing laboratory inventory and ordering lab supplies and equipment as necessary; keeping an accurate record of research account budgets; maintain regulatory and safety protocols and records; maintain a basic understanding of relevant literature; and participate in weekly lab meetings and attend departmental seminars. The successful candidate will be expected to work independently and keep accurate research records. A willingness to learn additional techniques and problem solve as needed for the advancement of the laboratory is important.

Required Qualifications:
A Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and three (3) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. Any combination of relevant education and experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline may be substituted for up to one year of the required work experience.
