Director of Communications

Occupational Summary: Reporting to the Chief Administrator in the Department of Neurosurgery, the Director of Communications is responsible for the planning, development and implementation of all of the Department's communication and marketing strategies and efforts, both external and internal. The Director of Communications will oversee the planning, coordination and the dissemination of news, communications, and marketing, to inform and educate the general public, media, faculty, staff and alumni about issues,events and contributions made by Duke Neurosurgery to the advancement of knowledge, medical research and health affairs.

Work Performed:

Create, implement and measure the success of an overall marketing and communications plan for the Department, with emphasis on Departmental website.
Ensure that the Department of Neurosurgery marketing strategies and tactics, including tactical marketing, market research and branding, are closely aligned with and supportive of the broader strategies of Duke Health.
Coordinate all communications projects, including strategic/concept development, selecting appropriate vendors as needed, coordinating meetings, developing timelines, and developing and adhering to budgets.
Collaborate with physician liaisons, technical consultants, graphic designers, photographers, and freelancers as needed.
Create and maintain a unified voice through print and electronic media in collaboration with Departmental leaders. Develop talking points for Departmental and institutional meetings, presentations, and visitors.
Coordinate with other School of Medicine marketing teams, the Duke Office of News and Communications, and other on-campus communications entities to disseminate news stories/communications efforts to the Duke University campus, regional, national, and international media. Conduct interviews, research, and write news releases, articles, and feature stories to local and national publications to publicize and promote the activities and programs when not directed by the Duke Office of News and Communications or other Duke marketing or communications group.
Manage and develop public websites, intranet sites, and other communication outlets.
Prepare reports and analyses setting forth progress, trends, and appropriate recommendations or conclusions.
Create supporting and timely content (eg, articles, commentaries, videos, etc.) for regular social media posts.
Generate promotional or informational items (print piece, online video, Tweet, etc.) that promote faculty members and/or our functional areas of practice. Keep current with latest technologies for communicating with various media and other internal and external constituencies.
Oversee the development and management of the Department of Neurosurgery marketing budget.
Coordinate project meetings and regularly communicate with Departmental leaders and project team members about project status.

Perform other related duties incidental to the work described therein.

Education
