Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Prior experience in academic department administration preferred. A strong candidate will demonstrate high-level organizational and critical thinking skills, as well as outstanding oral and written communication skills, and will demonstrate a record of superior task-management and follow-through. Preferred knowledge of campus human resources (including HRS), budgetary and finance regulations, sponsored grants management and timetable coordination.
This position serves as the Department Administrator for the Department of Asian Languages and Cultures, providing professional administrative leadership under the general supervision of the Chair.
This position is a member of the Department's Leadership Team along with the Chair and Associate Chair. The Department Administrator directs and coordinates management of staff (student coordinator, financial specialist) in their provision of departmental program support services. The responsibilities include personnel management, staff training, research administration, and dissemination of information and the interpretation of rules and regulations of staff policies and procedures for university, academic and faculty positions. These tasks are performed in collaboration with the departmental Leadership Team and administrative staff team to ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of the College and University. The Department Administrator has oversight of the departmental budget, including the administration of foundation, grant, and trust funds.
This is a complex high level administrative position. The department had expenditure in 2016 exceeding $3.3 million. Personnel consist of 17 faculty, 8 academic staff, 1 university staff, approximately 50 graduate assistants and student hourly helpers, emeritus faculty and staff, and visiting faculty. The department has approximately 55 graduate students in two graduate programs, 160 undergraduate majors and certificate students per year, studying over 12 languages. The department will begin additional undergraduate and graduate program in Fall 2018.
