Job Description Summary:

The George Washington University Columbian College of Arts and Sciences is the oldest and largest of the university’s academic units, providing the foundation for GW’s commitment to the liberal arts and a broad education for all students. The Psychology Department seeks to advance the science and practice of psychology through research and its dissemination, and to provide outstanding education and training to undergraduate and doctoral students. The faculty encourages a scientist/applied approach to psychology, achieved through research and coursework that emphasize psychological knowledge, theories and methods, and apply psychological science to important issues individuals, communities and society face.

The research investigates individual differences in, and the malleability of, visual perception and attention. Studies focus on what makes one individual a better visual searcher than another and how various factors affect visual search performance.

Data will be collected in our laboratory (i.e., through typical psychophysics studies with university participants) and through the mobile application Airport Scanner. The Airport Scanner app provides access to visual search “big data” with over 2.5 billion trials of data available so far.

The position is for one year with the possibility of extension, beginning January 1, 2017.

Job Duties:

  • Design and conduct behavioral research studies and analyze their results.
  • Write scientific reports of studies and present them also at scientific conferences.
  • Supervise and/or lead the creation of stimuli and software for the experiments.
  • Participate in lab meetings, seminars, and colloquia at GWU.
  • Lead data collection efforts associated with the Army Research Office grant.
  • Apply for extramural sources of funding.

Performs other related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

Require’s a PhD in the field or in a related area.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:
  • MATLAB/Psychtoolbox experience preferred
  • Strong statistical abilities are strongly preferred.
  • PhD in Psychology or related field is preferred.
  • Knowledge of vision and attention research and programming ability are preferred.
