The Beirne B. Carter Center for Immunology Research at the University of Virginia seeks a postdoctoral Research Associate to study immune mechanisms of virus control in Michael Brown's laboratory. This project will investigate how NK cells mediate virus control and protection of lymphoid architecture in the mouse spleen during murine cytomegalovirus (MCMV) infection. Previous work uncovered several quantitative trait loci (QTL) that affect the capacity of NK cells to mediate viral clearance and tissue protective effects, but the basis for regulation of these critical NK functions remains unknown (Gillespie et al (2016) PLoS Pathogens 12(2): e1005419). Classical genetics with genetic screening and genome editing, cellular immunology, bone marrow transplantation, immune cell adoptive transfer and molecular biological approaches will be implemented to precisely map, identify and characterize critical genetic modifiers of NK cells. A major goal is to understand how diversity in NK receptors and their ligands, and additional genetic modifiers together shape NK cell functionality, NK impacts on other immune cells, and inflammatory responses during viral infection, which can serve to model genetic effects known to influence clinical outcomes in human patients suffering from chronic viral infection.

Candidates must have an M.D. and/or a Ph.D. degree in Immunology in hand by the start date and additional experience in Biochemistry, Genetics, Microbiology, or Molecular Biology. The individual should be self-motivated and have developed skills in mentoring, written and oral communication, and the design and analysis of experimental questions.
