Posting Summary:
The American Sign Language (ASL) Program at the University of Virginia invites applications to fill a non-tenure track Drill Instructor position for the 2015-2016 academic year. Compensation will take the form of wages. This position does not offer benefits.

This position manages an hour and fifteen-minute drill session each week for the undergraduate beginning ASL courses, one each semester. The weekly drill sessions focus on engaging students in partner, small group, and class activities that reinforce and develop students' sign language skills and knowledge of ASL culture. Candidates for this position will have a BA in ASL, Deaf Studies, Education, or other related field, with a Masters' Degree in such fields preferred. Experience teaching ASL at the high school or college level is preferred, but not necessary for this position.

Qualified candidates for this position will possess native fluency in ASL, have extensive knowledge and understanding of Deaf culture, and be comfortable interacting with the Deaf community and communicating effectively with Deaf and hearing colleagues. Our UVA ASL courses use the Signing Naturally curriculum, so familiarity with this curriculum is a plus, and all our classes are "voice-off" using no spoken language. We are looking candidates who are enthusiastic, encouraging, and committed to excellence in teaching. Deaf candidates are encouraged to apply.
