Primary Function of Organization Unit: Crop Science is the largest department in the College of Agriculture & Life Sciences (CALS). It is a diverse department that encompasses six sub-disciplines involved in research, extension and teaching related to the genetic improvement of crops, crop physiology, production and utilization of agronomic and turf-grass crops, agroecology, and weed science. From genetically altering crop plants to withstand adverse environmental conditions (drought, heat), to management of biofuel crops, our scientists are working to feed, fuel, and clothe our world's growing population. This department is a leader nationally in innovation and discovery in crop science.

Essential Job Duties: The individual will design and execute experiments that work on identifying, cloning, and investigating the roles of specific genes involved in soil-borne disease resistance in the tobacco plant. The individual will be responsible for specific laboratory-based research projects that may involve generation and interpretation of next generation sequence data, high-throughput DNA marker genotyping, generation of transgenic tobacco plants, and gene editing. This person will be responsible for publishing and presenting these research findings. This employee may also be involved in management of field, greenhouse, and growth chamber experiments and in the collection of data from such experiments.

Minimum Education/Experience: Master's degree in Plant Biology, Molecular Plant Pathology, Crop Science, Genetics, Biochemistry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Botany, or a related field and 3 or more years experience as a Research Assistant in the above mentioned fields.

Department Required Skills: Five plus years experience with plant genetics, plant breeding. Ability to communicate with personnel in cooperating research programs will be important.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Ph.D. in Plant Biology, Molecular Plant Pathology, Crop Science, Genetics, Biochemistry, Agronomy, Horticulture, Botany, or a related field. Prior experience in gene cloning, creation of T-DNA constructs, plant tissue culture, and management of transgenic plants; and previous experience in gene editing in plants.
