The Department of Chemistry at the University of Virginia invites candidates, excited for the opportunity to work in a dynamic and collaborative research environment, to apply for a Research Scientist position. The incumbent will perform research to develop new technology (a) for sequence analysis of intact proteins by front-end electron transfer dissociation, high resolution mass spectrometry on Orbitrap type instrumentation, (b) for enrichment and characterization of post-translationally modified class I MHC peptides to be used for immunotherapy of cancer, and (c) for probing how lipid-signaling networks coordinate the mammalian immune response.
Completion of the Ph.D. degree in Chemistry is required by the appointment start date. Candidates are also required to have already published papers in peer reviewed journals on the following topics: (a) fatty acid profiling of complex lipids, (b) use of immobilized metal (Fe+3) affinity columns for enrichment of phosphopeptides, (c) identification of class I MHC peptides presented on cancer cells and recognized by human cytotoxic T-cells, (d) identification of proteins expressed in microparticles derived from human plasma and (e) capillary electrophoresis interfaced to mass spectrometry. Candidates must also have extensive experience with Thermo Scientifc mass spectrometers, including the LTQ, LTQ (CID/ETD)-Orbitrap and Q Exactive instruments. Candidates also must have effective oral and written communication skills.
