The Department of English and program in Creative Writing (fiction) at the University of Virginia invites applications from fiction writers of exceptional international stature for the position of the Kapnick Distinguished Writer-in-Residence in either the fall or the spring term of the 2016- 2017, 2017- 2018, and 2018-2019 academic year. The inspiration for this position came from the example of William Faulkner, who was the Balch Writer in Residence at the University from 1956-1958. The compensation for this post will be commensurate with the very highest levels of literary distinction and international prestige.
The Kapnick family distinguished Writer-in-Residence is a one-semester nonrenewable appointment. The successful candidate will have an exceptional record of publication and major honors both in the U.S. and abroad, and will express a commitment to contribute to the literary life of the Program in Creative Writing, the Department of English, cognate language and literature departments, and the University as a whole. Duties will include teaching and public presentations by agreement with the chair of the English Department, and the Director of the Creative Writing Program.
