About The Unit:

Unit Job Summary: Network Engineer II - Wireless Specialization: Develops, designs, implements, and supports an Information Technology Services (IT Services) wireless network. Responsibilities include the following: Consulting to determine client technical needs; diagnosing and resolving wireless network problems; and monitoring and supporting wireless services. Given specifications, develops, designs, documents, and implements new networks or modifications to existing networks. Analyzes workload, monitors network capacity and performance, and diagnoses and resolves moderately complex network problems. Monitors and proactively supports wireless connectivity and associated infrastructure such as controllers, authentication and guest access servers. Conducts trending and analysis of network traffic patterns and makes recommendations. Configures network hardware and services for the network environment. Performs hands on Cisco wireless controller installation, configuration, and network outage resolution. Coordinates the installation of network hardware, communications wiring, wireless telecommunication facilities, communications software, and other network components. Supports help desk personnel in identifying problems with client endpoint wireless connectivity, switches, routers, and other network components. Evaluates new products/technologies to determine impact and opportunities on existing system configurations, wireless network performance and functionality improvements. Create and update design technical, and reference documentation, specifications and wireless network standards.

Unit Education: Bachelor's Degree in an IT related field or equivalent work experience required. Cisco Certified Network Associate (CCNA) certification preferred.

Unit Experience: Minimum five years of related experience in IT Operations environments with similar technologies required Progressive experience installing wireless technology in an enterprise network environment required. Experience using Cisco wireless technologies such as APs, controllers, Prime Infrastructure, MSE, and etc required. Experience with TCP/IP networks including DNS, DHCP, IP tunnels, VPNs, and firewalls preferred.

Unit Job Function Competencies: Strong understanding of wireless technologies required. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills required. Basic understanding of network packet capture and packet analysis required. Working knowledge of Perl scripting required. Basic understanding and use of UNIX commands required. Familiarity with SNMP and its concepts required. Excellent communication skills, especially in conveying technical concepts to a non-technical audience required. Ability to diagnose complex technical problems required. Ability to work independently, handling multiple tasks, and sometimes extreme deadline pressure required. Ability to handle emergency situations outside of normal business hours required. Familiarity with Spanning Tree Protocol (STP), VLAN Trunking Protocol (VTP) preferred. Firm understanding of network topology and architecture preferred. Basic understanding of VoIP topology and call setup operations preferred. Demonstrated understanding of the following is preferred: common circuit types; wired and wireless routing protocols; network security concepts; VOIP; DNS; DHCP; current Cisco routers and switches; and network management and monitoring tools.
