The Associate Dean for Residential and Pre-Major Advising works closely with the other members of the senior management team in Undergraduate Advising & Research (UAR) to provide strategy, vision and direction for providing advising resources to Stanford undergraduates. The Associate Dean directly oversees the direction and development of the Academic Advising Director program, a residentially-based advising program designed to provide comprehensive academic advising to undeclared students, as well as some advising services to declared students.

Core Duties
  • Manage the work of managers to implement the strategic goals of the unit. Specifically, manage and develop the residential advising component of UAR, which serves all students with a special focus on first-year and second-year students.
  • Make hiring decisions, provide coaching and mentoring, and manage performance and staffing levels for Academic Advising Directors within UAR.
  • Stay abreast of national trends in advising, especially those pertaining to residential programs.
  • Serve as UAR's primary liaison with Department/Program Chairs, Directors of Undergraduate Study, and other program directors in matters of curricular developments and academic offerings.
  • Exercise broad discretion in addressing complex advising-related issues for individual students, especially those encountering academic difficulties, using advanced knowledge of University policies, procedures and curricular requirements.
  • Provide strategic direction for and manage two major areas, Residential Advising and Pre-Major Advising, which includes planning and managing program budgets of $50,000 and $70,000, respectively.
  • Develop tools for analyzing and assessing Residential and Pre-Major Advising programs, communicate those assessments to senior staff and to other constituencies, as appropriate.
  • Review exceptions to university, program or unit policies and procedures, settle grievances. Make recommendations that may impact the unit's academic capabilities.

    Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree and eight years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.
  • Experience in higher education (including teaching and research) strongly preferred. Advanced degree strongly preferred. Ph.D. preferred.
  • User knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Advanced communication skills to clearly and effectively communicate information to internal and external audiences, client groups, and all levels of management.
  • Strong leadership and strategic management skills with experience managing people.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively.
