Job Description Summary:

The Laboratory of Dr. Mary Ann Stepp at the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences Department of Anatomy and Regenerative Medicine is seeking for a full time Research Assistant. The research involves studying the cornea and its niche to understand is how corneal epithelial stem cells are maintained within their niche in normal tissue homeostasis and during wound healing. In the lab, the focus is on how epithelial cells adhere to the underlying extracellular matrix via proteins called integrins to minimize both the development and the progression of stem cell deficiency and to design treatments for patients suffering from this disease. The laboratory utilizes extensive cell culture, biochemical, molecular biology, surgical and histological techniques. The Research Assistant will assist senior research staff in the conduct of research and will carry out experiments under the supervision direction of the PI. Specific responsibilities include:
- Small animal surgeries using sterile approaches and subsequent post-operative care
– Cell cultures
– Cryostat sectioning and antibody staining of frozen sections
– Biochemistry including western blots
– Genotyping
– Microscopy and analysis
– Provides assistance to the post-docs and lab manager.
– Works closely with students.
– Maintains equipment and animal logs
– RNA extraction and RT-PCT techniques
– Performs other duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position.

Minimum Qualifications:

A BA/BS in related discipline is required, or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Additional Required Licenses/Certifications/Posting Specific Minimum Qualifications: Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in biochemistry, biology or chemistry is preferred but not required.
Experience working in laboratory.
Experience working with rodents.
Basic knowledge of microscopy.
Organized and self motivated.
Small animal surgery experience.
