Primary Function of Organization Unit: The Department of Clinical Sciences is dedicated to excellence in educating and training veterinarians and comparative biomedical scientists, furthering health care and wellness through discovery and clinical research, providing outstanding and compassionate medical care to a diverse range of animal patients, effectively engaging the animal-owning public, government and industry partners, and providing leadership in integrating biomedical sciences to advance One Health.
Essential Job Duties: Duties for the BSL3 Biocontainment Laboratory, the Vector Borne Disease Diagnostic Laboratory and Intracellular Pathogens Research Laboratory: * Manage facility, equipment and supplies for BSL3 biocontainment laboratory. * Review annually the BioManual with assistance of the EH&S Biosafety Officer. * Participate in annual inspection of the facility to satisfy institutional and federal regulations. * Train prospective researchers in biosafety procedures and establish criteria by which access is authorized. * Develop financial plan to operate unit as a cost recovery service center. * Maintain appropriate records for certification of unit under CDC and federal guidelines. * Hiring and replacement of personnel. * Time management and effort appraisals of (3-4) SPA positions. * Safety training of all personnel (range 5- 12 people). * Participation in the certification of premises as BSL2 and BSL3 on Federal, State and Institutional levels. * Budget oversight of the revenue generated by the diagnostic service including: long range business plan development, application of disaster recovery plans, day to day authorization of purchases of supplies and equipment, Preparation and submission of budgets for grants and TSA. * General scientific skills: Generate hypotheses, design and execute experiments including appropriate controls, trouble-shooting and analyzing results. * Specific laboratory skills: Molecular biology including PCR, DNA sequencing, Cloning, Protein Production and Purification, ELISA, Immunoflourescent antibody assay production and evaluation, Western Blot, Diagnostic test development and validation, Cell and bacterial culture (primary and established cell lines as well as pathogens), Animal handling and assessment (rodent, canine and feline), Tick collection and laboratory maintenance and handling of ticks. *Mentorship: Must provide a positive training environment for and mentor undergraduate and graduate students, post-docs and staff. * Manuscript and Grant preparation: data collection, drafting of manuscripts and grants, editing and final formatting for submission to publishers, participation in the peer referee process for manuscripts at the request of publishers, website design and preparation of information useful to the client base of the VBDDL diagnostic service
Minimum Education/Experience: Relevant post-Baccalaureate degree required; for candidates demonstrating comparable independent research productivity or an undergraduate degree and 3 or more years of relevant experience in substitution, or equivalent independent experience and education.

Preferred Experience, Skills, Training/Education: Specific laboratory skills: Molecular biology including development of novel PCR assays (conventional, real-time and RT-PCR), DNA sequencing, RNA isolation, Cloning (for sequencing and expression), Protein Production and Purification, ELISA, Immunoflourescent antibody assay production and evaluation, Immunohisto/cyto chemistry, Western Blot, Diagnostic test development and validation, Cell and bacterial culture (primary and established cell lines as well as pathogens), Animal handling and assessment (rodent, canine and feline), Tick collection and laboratory maintenance and handling of ticks.
