Duties: Integral to the University of Pennsylvania's Development and Alumni Relations Marketing and Communications (DARMAX) department, the Director of Strategic Writing Services performs as a high-level conceptual writer and manager who communicates with precision and eloquence to advance the University's mission and goals. The successful candidate will view the ability to generate creative, powerful writing as his/her true calling and be passionate about the complexities of the written word and the art of effective storytelling. The successful candidate will also be a voracious reader with the ability to absorb, assimilate and communicate information on a wide variety of topics. Interact effectively with top levels of the University's leadership as well as with valued philanthropists and high-level volunteers. Engage collaboratively with Development and Alumni Relations staff throughout the University while providing expertise and excellent customer service to all internal partners. This position manages a three-person team of experienced writers tasked with producing executive remarks, strategic fundraising materials and creative content for print and online channels in a demanding, deadline-driven environment. Evaluate the performance of direct-reports and manage them to produce their best work on an ongoing basis. This position reports to the Executive Director of Development and Alumni Relations Marketing and Communications.

Qualifications: Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and 7 to 10 years of professional work experience in Communications or a related field. At least three years of strong supervisory experience with demonstrated ability to motivate people and nurture talent, lead teams through change, set priorities, facilitate productive meetings and measure and manage performance. Excellent project management skills. Must be a seasoned, published wordsmith, capable of producing cogent, eloquent and strategic prose. Must be a confident writer, able to maintain composure and command when juggling multiple assignments. Strong editing and proofreading skills. Strong analytical abilities. Attention to detail is a must with the ability to translate complex information into engaging, multi-layered narratives. Demonstrated history of effective performance within demanding, deadline-driven environments. Must be self-motivated with a strong work ethic and sense of urgency. Excellent interpersonal skills with the ability to function with diplomacy and service orientation. A passion for working in an extremely dynamic organization that values diversity, innovation and high-performance.
Must be a big-picture thinker, capable of organizing, motivating and leading a team to meet strategic goals. Ability to staff events as needed.
