The University of South Carolina's Law Library seeks a highly-motivated and service-oriented reference librarian to join the professional staff of an academic research library with the primary goal of supporting the work of the 52 faculty and over 640 students of the School of Law, but which also actively serves the University community, state government, the Bench and Bar, and the citizens of South Carolina. This is a full-time 12 month position in the tenure-track.
Core duties: The Reference Librarian participates in staffing the reference desk; teaches introductory legal research in a required first-year integrated research and writing course, and may participate in the teaching of an advanced legal research course; conducts library orientation tours and delivers bibliographic lectures and resource consultations; participates in collection development; creates research guides, tutorials, displays, and other resources in furtherance of the Law Library's mission to support the educational activities of the Law School and the University, and to facilitate public access to legal information; and engages in other special duties and projects, as assigned. This position reports to the Associate Director for Library Operations and works as a team member within the reference department, as well as within the legal research instruction program. Specialized duties: This position will focus on the library's scholarly communications efforts. The librarian's duties may include: devising and implementing a strategy for populating and promoting use of the university's institutional repository; tracking ongoing developments and trends in scholarly communication; collaborating with law school IT staff in the development and creation of tools and services to facilitate scholarly communication; and generally promote library resources and services in support of legal scholarship.
Required: J.D. from an ABA-accredited law school and M.L.S. or equivalent degree from ALA-accredited school.
Preferred: Experience in classroom teaching, experience working with digital repositories, interest in or knowledge of copyright law. Ability to identify, learn, and recommend new technology independently. One or more years of public service/reference experience, preferably dealing with the general public.
