Job description

Duties: We seek a research assistant for large, multi-site, federally-funded studies investigating interventions designed to prevent healthcare-associated infections and to decrease infections due to antibiotic resistant bacteria. The study patients can be current hospital inpatients or outpatients. The primary responsibilities of the research assistant will be to:
1) Abstract pertinent information from medical charts directly into an electronic database. Data to be collected will include: patient demographics, clinical and laboratory data, vital signs, medications. The research assistant will follow a standardized process designed to ensure consistency and reliability. Data will be collected primarily from electronic databases within the University of Pennsylvania Health System (UPHS). These databases include PennChart/EPIC and Medview.
2) Assist research coordinators in collection of study samples (human or environmental), obtaining informed consent from human subjects, and keeping detailed records of patients included/excluded from studies.
3) The research assistant will attend regular study group meetings, work with and report to investigators, the overall project manager, and research coordinators, He/She will also interact with healthcare workers caring for potential study subjects.

Qualifications: A HS Diploma and 3-5 years of experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience, are required. BA/BS is preferred. Prior clinical research experience is preferred. Previous clinical research experience using hospital databases (e.g., EPIC, Sunrise, Medview) is a plus. Having some familiarity with medical terminology is highly desirable. Experience with RedCap is a plus. In addition, the research assistant needs to be able to work independently, demonstrate great attention to detail, have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, maintain orderly records, be highly organized and seek guidance as necessary. Flexibility to work occasional early evenings/weekends is required.
