Position Summary

Provides support to local programs, clients and participants, related to MSU Extension early childhood education programs and as part of the MSU Extension Children and Youth Institute; provides education for adults on topics related to early childhood education; oversees and ensures program / project promotion and expansion activities; assists with data gathering for impact evaluation efforts; and works in conjunction with supervisor, program participants and community partners to attain both short-term and long-term goals and objectives. Through supervising educator, works in concert with the appropriate MSU Extension Institute and/or work team(s) to ensure alignment of programs with overall goals of work team, Institute and organization.

 

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES

 

  • Under the direction of the Supervising Educator, plan, organize and carry out programs that meet current and projected needs related to early childhood education programming.

  • Provide expertise and information to adult clientele related to early childhood education including parents and childcare providers.

  • Collaborate with the appropriate MSU Extension Institute work teams.

  • Plan, organize and implement programs that are relevant to program area and meet the needs of local residents. 

  • Operates somewhat independently, with minimal supervision, ensuring that program delivery follows prescribed guidelines and meets the goals for reaching specific audiences.

  • Provide information and opportunities for learning through the use of technology, mass media, group meetings, workshops and individual contacts.

  • Attend various and related local program meetings or committee meetings, as well as community planning activities, as appropriate.

  • Represent MSU Extension in activities, meetings, etc. in a manner that reflects collegial connection with the community, the research and knowledge of the University, and the goodwill of MSU Extension.

  • Reach a diverse audience through traditional and newly developed programs.

  • Actively participate in a variety of professional development opportunities to attain and retain program knowledge and delivery skills.

  • Understands and implements Civil Rights policies and compliance.

  • Gather and report programming outputs and impacts, to demonstrate program effectiveness and to guide future program priorities for MSU Extension, the Children and Youth Institute and the Child and Family Development work group;

  • Work to ensure that community needs assessments, program development and recruitment efforts include the engagement of Michigan's diverse residents across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences.

Unit Specific Education/Experience/Skills

The job requires:  Bachelor's degree in Child Development, Family Studies or related to position responsibilities; two years of experience in program management and delivery in area of focus; proficient computer operation skills (e.g. Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, etc.); and effective oral and written communication skills. Combination of education and specific, relevant experience may be considered in lieu of degree. Ability to lift and carry educational materials, equipment, etc. up to25 lbs. and to travel in local and surrounding communities and occasional long distance travel are required as a regular part of this position; transportation is the responsibility of the employee. Demonstrated success in program development and delivery to diverse audiences / communities, including, but not limited to, race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences; proven ability in establishing and working with a diverse network of constituents and community members across race, gender, socioeconomic class, disabilities and other differences to assist with program development and outreach; and, understanding of and ability to implement Civil Rights principles and compliance standards.

Desired Qualifications

Experience with adult education and additional experience in area of expertise is desired.

 

 

 

 

 

Other skills and/or physical abilities required to perform duties of the position. Ability to provide programming in the evening and on weekends as needed.
