Monmouth College is a private, selective, residential liberal arts college, offering majors in the natural sciences, social sciences, arts and humanities, as well as outstanding academic advising, small, seminar-style classes, varied internship and study abroad opportunities, and summer research experiences to thoughtful, intellectually engaged and ambitious students from across the United States and around the world. Reporting to the President of the College, the Vice President for Student Life and Dean of Students provides leadership consistent with the mission of the College in all areas of Student Life, including NCAA Division III athletics. The Vice President will actively promote collaboration between Student Affairs and Academic Affairs to provide an integrated experience that, through the liberating power of the liberal arts and sciences, enables a diverse body of students to find and free the possibilities inherent in their lives. Activities of the Student Life program complement the College’s academic programs and foster more than 120 student organizations, including an active Fraternity and Sorority Life program. The Vice President also serves on the senior leadership team and supervises the following areas in Student Life: Residence Life, Housing, Judicial, Campus Events, Career and Leadership Center, Student Success, Athletics, Counseling Center, Religious and Spiritual Life, Fraternity and Sorority Life, Multicultural Student Services, International Student Services, Student Publications, Health and Wellness, Title IX Coordinator and Campus Safety. The Vice President has frequent contact with staff, faculty, students, other members of the campus community and public in a leadership role.
Responsibilities of the Vice President will include, but will not necessarily be limited to the following:
- provide leadership for all programs affecting student development;
- work with division managers to develop and administer the Student Life budget, including forecasting, planning, and monitoring of expenses, ensuring each unit adheres to budgetary guidelines;
- formulate, recommend, implement, and evaluate policies, procedures, programs, processes, and systems for Student Life;
- articulate and advocate student needs and concerns to the College community;
- act as liaison to the academic divisions regarding student issues;
- develop and lead a strong student life staff;
- oversee all matters related to student behavior and discipline;
- foster cooperative relationships with appropriate College and community constituencies;
- participate in professional organizations related to student life in higher education;
- ensure consistency of student support services and programming;
- ensure compliance pertaining to students with regard to the following: Clery Act reporting, SEVIS, Title IX and ADA/Section 504;
- supervise NCAA Midwest Conference Division III intercollegiate athletics, Recreation and Intramural sports;
- provide leadership for student publications;
- serve as staff liaison to the Student Affairs committee of the Board of Trustees; and
- serve as a member of the President’s Senior Staff and on other administrative committees.
A master’s degree (PhD preferred) in counseling, student personnel, higher education or related field is required. In addition, the Vice President will be expected to demonstrate substantive, progressive administrative leadership experience in higher education as well as the following:
- the ability to successfully manage multi-functional and diverse areas;
- a strong commitment to student development;
- an awareness and embracing of the joy and values of a life on a residential liberal arts college campus;
- a team approach to problem-solving;
- an understanding of the power of information technology to deliver, monitor, and evaluate programs and services for students;
- knowledge of student disciplinary and judicial processes;
- strong knowledge of Title IX issues;
- strong knowledge of academic affairs; and
- a commitment to diversity and multiculturalism.
