The College of Engineering at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign invites applications and nominations for the position of Head of the Department of Nuclear, Plasma, & Radiological Engineering (NPRE).

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) has a growing multi-disciplinary theme for scientific innovation. It is the home of the College of Engineering (ranked 5th in the U.S.), and several centers and initiatives that include: the National Center for Supercomputing Applications (NCSA), the Beckman Institute for Advanced Science and Technology, the Research Park (one of Inc. Magazine's "Top 3 College Town Incubators" and one of Forbes' "12 Business Incubators Changing the World"), the Micro and Nano Technology Laboratory, the Fredrick Seitz Materials Research Lab, the Institute of Genomic Biology, and the Institute for Sustainability, Energy, and Environment. In addition, UIUC is establishing the first engineering-based College of Medicine and is expanding its education and research in Big Data and Bioengineering through the recent $100M donation of Grainger Foundation to establish the Grainger Engineering Breakthroughs Initiative (GEBI).

The NPRE Department has a long history, now more than 55 years, of excellence in education, research, and service in the field of nuclear engineering. The NPRE faculty offers comprehensive research and education programs centered on three theme areas: (1) nuclear power engineering, (2) fusion and plasma science and engineering, and (3) radiological engineering and medical physics. Specific research and academic strategic directions include: Radiological imaging, risk and reliability analysis, nuclear non-proliferation, radiation detection, neutronics, thermal-hydraulics, fuel cycle, nuclear materials, radiation damage, plasma nanosynthesis and fusion plasma-material interaction.

The Department currently has 16 full-time faculty, 142 undergraduate students and 115 graduate students. More information about the NPRE Department can be found at

The Department Head is a tenured full Professor in NPRE and reports to the Dean of the College of Engineering. The position serves as the chief executive officer, responsible for all administrative, budgetary, hiring, and promotion decisions in the Department. The incumbent has significant discretion and authority for leading the faculty in their missions of research, teaching, and public service. The search committee seeks candidates with a distinguished record of scholarly achievement and internationally recognized in their field for research excellence, leadership, and scholarship.

The successful candidate will:
  • Enhance the Department's visibility as an international leader in education and research.
  • Provide vision and leadership for the future of scholarship and education in NPRE, and the role of NPRE faculty and students in addressing critical societal challenges.
  • Work with campus and college leadership to integrate the NPRE vision with the strategic goals of the campus and college.
  • Promote the Department through engagement with its 1,400 alumni.
  • Work with college and campus development offices to enhance the financial resources available to achieve the goals of the Department.
  • Nurture the collegial environment that has made the Department a leader in research and education.
  • Engage with new College of Medicine and other major campus-wide initiatives

The desired start date for this position is August 16, 2017, or as soon as possible thereafter.
