Occupational summary:

Perform technical and semi-professional duties as required for managing the Culberson Lichen Herbarium.

Work Performed:
  • Preserve lichen specimens used for scientific research, to include receiving, processing, labeling, filing and shipping specimens.
  • Make work assignments and supervise assistants (undergraduate and graduate students), to include pressing, labeling, and geo-referencing specimens as needed. Maintain and update filing of prepared specimens.
  • Update taxonomic changes in the collection and the associated databases, and perform the necessary reorganizations.
  • Enter specimen data into the herbarium database and oversee data-basing activities.
  • Integrate geo-references, chemical and molecular data with specimen information for incorporation into the database.
  • Maintain files and records for specimens received as loans, gifts and exchanges.
  • Correspond with other herbaria to coordinate loans; supervise the preparation of specimens and records to be transported.
  • Collect and identify lichen specimens and obtain necessary collecting permits for specimens to be deposited in the herbarium.
  • Revise identifications of lichens in, or to be deposited in, the Culberson Lichen Herbarium.
  • Contribute to floristic studies of lichens, including keys of identification and description of new taxa.
  • Develop materials summarizing floristic, taxonomic and type specimen information (including imaging) from the Culberson Lichen Herbarium for the Duke Herbarium website.
  • Enhance and maintain the accessibility of the data from the Culberson Lichen Herbarium through the world-wide-web.
  • Contribute to the development of grant proposals for specimen-based projects in collaboration with the Curator of the Culberson Lichen Herbarium.
  • Coordinate with the managers of the bryophytes and fungi collections on budget, purchase of supplies and other matters that concern the herbarium as a whole.

Education
Work requires an Associates in Computer Science or equivalent technical training, or non-technical Bachelor's.
Experience
2 years data management, research or medical experience. OR AN EQUIVALENT COMBINATION OF RELEVANT EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

Knowledge of thin-layer chromatography, DNA barcoding, specimen imaging and microscopy imaging systems preferred. Must be organized, detail-oriented and able to work well with users of the collection, the curator of the lichen collection, and the director of the Duke herbarium. The curator of the Culberson lichen collection will be the main supervisor and will be responsible for the annual performance reviews for this position.
