Barren County is located in South Central Kentucky. The Extension Agent for Horticulture Education will provide leadership for educational programs in home and commercial horticulture for Barren County. The Agent responsibilities include: (1) develop horticultural expertise of local citizens through educational programs such as the Master Gardener Program; (2) development of field trails, test demonstrations and result demonstrations in areas related to horticultural production; (3) serve as a resource to the community through answering horticultural related consumer questions; (4) utilize and/or develop councils, advisory groups, and committees to facilitate community involvement in programming; (5) jointly share responsibility in community programming around issues involving leadership development, community involvement, local government, community services and other forms of community economic development; (6) ensure that all youth and adults have an equal opportunity to participate in Extension programs regardless of race, color, age, sex, religion, disability, or national origin.

All agents in a county will support the dissemination of useful and practical information on subjects relating to Agriculture, Family Consumer Sciences, 4-H and Community and Rural Development as outlined in the KRS statues 164.605 to 164.675.

Physical Requirements

Job-related travel including overnight stays; visiting clientele at sites throughout the county (including farms); standing/walking for long periods; handling of average-weight objects up to 25 pounds.


Monday - Friday 8:00am - 5:00pm with evenings and week-ends as needed. Most weeks will exceed 40 hours.


Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and in writing with groups, individuals and through mass media.

Ability to use the computer for program delivery and management.

Ability to visit clientele at sites throughout the county.

Ability to plan and teach educational programs.

Demonstrated leadership and ability to serve as a positive role model.

Bachelors or Master's degree in Agriculture, Horticulture, or closely related field.
