The Harvard Library seeks an innovative librarian with proven experience in STEM librarianship who will lead the ongoing transformation of the acquisition, support, and delivery of science information services, collections, and spaces. The Director for Sciences and Engineering Services will integrate diverse staff, resources, and technologies and collaborate with faculty to cultivate a vibrant research and learning community within the sciences and engineering domain and across disciplines. Following a recent reinvestment in the collections budget for the sciences and an impressive renovation of the Cabot Science Library, the next Director will have the exciting opportunity to capitalize on the new space and strategically deploy increased resources to elevate the impact of library services across the sciences in support of the teaching, learning, and research enterprises of the University.

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Research and Education, the Director will be responsible for developing integrated services for libraries in the Faculty of Arts and Sciences (FAS). The position will directly oversee the staff supporting the majority of FAS science departments, the department of mathematics, and the John A. Paulson School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS) and will collaborate closely with librarians serving the Arnold Arboretum, the Harvard University Herbaria, the Museum of Comparative Zoology, and the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics.

The science and engineering information network will sustain excellence in information access through unique and shared collections, reference and research consultation, database training, support of research data management, and support of scholarly communication, open access, and copyright guidance. The position will oversee a team responsible for building strong partnerships with faculty, contributing at all points of the research lifecycle, and engaging with students in ways that encourage the full use of the Library's many services. The Director will oversee a staff of eight librarians and budget of $5.5 million.

Basic qualifications for this role include an American Library Association (ALA) accredited Master's in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent experience in academic library administration; a Master's degree in a related academic field or other professional experience in a STEM institution; a minimum of seven years of management experience in a research library setting; and a strong record of professional and scholarly accomplishments. Additional qualifications include a proven facility in managing a complex organization, including human, physical, and significant financial resources; the ability to collaborate and manage effectively in a decentralized matrix environment; an understanding of the major challenges facing academic libraries in areas such as open access, technology integration, collection development, space planning and utilization, scholarly publishing, and organizational development to support rapidly changing user needs and expectations; a demonstrated knowledge of emerging trends in science and engineering research and pedagogy which affect library services and the ability to build relationships and work in partnership with multiple constituencies, including University faculty, administration, staff, and students internally, and the greater community, other academic institutions, and professional associations externally.
