The Department of Music at The College of New Jersey seeks applicants for the full-time position of Interim Director of Bands for the 2017–2018 academic year.

The successful candidate will oversee all aspects of the band program, with teaching responsibilities including Wind Ensemble, Basic Instrumental Conducting, and Intermediate Instrumental Conducting. Additional teaching may be assigned for the 7–12 Instrumental Practicum, Instrumental Literature, and/or a Liberal Arts music course depending on the candidate’s experience and expertise, as well as departmental needs. The full-time Interim Director of Bands position also includes independent, departmental, and college-wide recruitment responsibilities. Developing and maintaining contacts and positive relationships with regional music educators, community constituents, and professional organizations is expected. Excellent oral, interpersonal, and writing skills in an academic context are required.

Minimum qualifications:

  • DMA in Conducting (instrumental emphasis); or EdD or terminal degree in music with
    appropriate artistic expertise and experience. (Candidates with ABD status effective by August 2017 will also be considered.)
  • Extensive experience and accomplishment as a band director at the secondary and college levels (including as a Graduate Assistant directing one’s own ensemble).
  • Teaching experience in college-level conducting classes.
  • Consistent accomplishments in juried artistic/scholarly activities on the national and international levels.

The ideal candidate will foster a high-level performance environment in a Liberal Arts context, while being committed to College-wide engagement in instrumental music. They will also possess a clear understanding of current developments in secondary and post- secondary education, work closely and collaboratively with Department of Music colleagues, and exhibit potential for a distinguished career as a teacher-scholar and performing artist on national and international levels. Such attributes include (but are not limited to) a record of recruiting, innovative programming, and desire to work with students in a competitive, interdisciplinary Liberal Arts community. Examples of artistic/scholarly interests might include social justice issues related to music (such as race and gender) and innovative uses of technology.
