Job Description



The Clinical Mental Health Assessor provides clinical mental health assessments (to children and adults) and intakes in the client's home environments. He or she assesses each individual for the severity of clinical presentation and makes appropriate decisions about clinical placement within the agency and/or for referral to community providers/resources. The Clinical Mental Health Assessor may occasionally work with community organizations, such as hospitals and correctional facilities. The position presents an opportunity to supervise and/or carry a small caseload of adult and/or youth clients, if desired.

The ideal candidate must be a current Licensed Mental Health Professional or Licensed Mental Health Professional-Resident/Eligible in the state of Virginia. Effective oral and written skills, empathy and interpersonal skills, good time management, and excellent keyboarding and computer skills (must be able to complete concurrent documentation), and professional dress, speech, and behavior are all required for this position.

  • Completes initial clinical assessments and intakes in the home setting of potential clients
  • Makes appropriate decisions about clinical placement within the agency and/or for referral to community providers/resources
  • Establishes preliminary diagnosis as required for managed care purposes
  • Completes thorough risk assessments and submits them in a timely manner
  • Recognizes clinical indicators of a crisis situation and refers as necessary to immediate crisis resources, both within and external
  • Manages all required paperwork and records and prepares documentation (forms, reports, etc.) as required through agency policy
  • Ensures compliance with all applicable federal and state laws and all company policies
  • Submits documentation within the mandated timeframes

  • Qualified as a Licensed Mental Health Professional with a Master's degree in a mental health related field and the relevant experience working with the population that will be assessed. Licensed as a LMHP (Licensed Mental Health Professional) means any VA licensed physician, licensed clinical psychologist, LCSW, LPC, licensed substance abuse treatment practitioner, licensed marriage and family therapist, or certified psychiatric clinical nurse specialist/practitioner. LMHP also refers to a person who has completed his/her graduate degree and is under the direct personal supervision of a person licensed under VA law, who is working towards licensure, and who is in compliance with the appropriate VA licensing board requirements.
  • Must possess a minimum of 1-2 years' work experience within the human services field
  • Proficiency using the current DSM manual and in making accurate diagnoses
  • Knowledge of impact of medical issues and co-occurring disorders on functioning
  • Through knowledge of clinical pathology and a broad range of psychosocial assessment and treatment approaches for individuals with serious and persistent mental illness
  • Excellent communication skills, verbal and written
  • Excellent computer and Microsoft Office skills
  • Knowledge of community resources
  • Must have a valid Driver's License and valid proof of Auto Insurance
  • Experience working with the publicly-funded mental health system preferred
  • Knowledge and experience working with the VA Access to Care Criteria for adults and children preferred
  • Knowledge of and experience in using Motivational Interviewing preferred
  • Must be willing to complete intake assessments with potential clients and their families in their natural environments (i.e. home settings)
