Required Qualifications (as evidenced by an attached resume):

Bachelor's Degree. Four years of full time fundraising experience in Higher Education, a complex healthcare system, or a large non-profit. Proven record of success in cultivating, soliciting, and closing major level ($100,000+) gifts from individual donors, as evidenced in resume. Experience managing a portfolio of donor relationships.

Preferred Qualifications:

Master's Degree. Additional years of fundraising experience in higher education or a healthcare institution. Experience developing or leading successful grateful patient programs. Experience working closely with healthcare leadership and physicians. Experience managing volunteers or an advisory board. Expert knowledge of donor and/or constituent database programs such as Raiser’s Edge or similar software.

Brief Description of Duties:

Reporting to the Assistant Vice President for Medical Center Advancement, the Director of Development will lead fundraising efforts for one or more departments at Stony Brook Medicine. Working closely with the AVP and the chairs and faculty of these departments, the Director will design a comprehensive fundraising plan and strategy for the areas within his/her portfolio. Such plans should include grateful patient fundraising, leadership annual giving, community event support, and corporate and foundation relations. For success in this role, the selected candidate must possess excellent written and verbal communications skills. Importantly, the Director will have an appreciation for the complex scientific research underpinning highly successful academic medicine, and an ability to share the department’s vision and promise with potential donors.

The Director will meet with key prospects and individual donors, cultivate them for gifts, solicit prospects, and coordinate all faculty fundraising activities. While subject to change based on an individual development officer’s portfolio, s/he will be required to meet clearly defined metrics annually including 130 face-to-face visits, 180 substantive contacts, 15 major gift proposals presented, 8 proposals closed, and a dollar goal based on tenure, portfolio, and opportunity. The selected candidate will be responsible for the following duties:

Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising program for the assigned department(s) including annual giving, major giving, and corporate and foundation strategies, as well as for other strategic areas as identified. In partnership with the department chairs and faculty, cultivate and solicit prospects that will include wealthy individuals, corporations, and local and national foundations. Identify, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and/or steward each prospect. Assist with the development and implementation of a physician education model and donor referral program to identify grateful patients for cultivation. Steward existing donors appropriately to encourage long-term relationships with the relevant department. Achieve specific and measureable goals for contacts, prospect phase management, proposals presented and dollars raised. Serve as a member of the Stony Brook Medical Advancement team, coordinating efforts with the broader work of University Advancement, participating as a fellow professional and team member in various advancement tasks and functions, and communicating clearly and consistently with colleagues and the Assistant VP for Medical Advancement about goals, progress and activities. Engage volunteers to utilize them in cultivation and solicitation of gifts. Attend appropriate alumni, college, and university events that present opportunities to advance prospect or donor relationships. Other duties or projects as assigned as appropriate to rank and departmental mission.

Special Notes: This is a full time position. FLSA Exempt position, not eligible for the overtime provisions of the FLSA. Minimum salary threshold must be met to maintain FLSA exemption.
