Degree and Area of Specialization:
Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science degree preferred.
Minimum number of years and type of relevant work experience:
Prior experience in academic department administration preferred. A strong candidate will demonstrate high-level organizational and critical thinking skills, as well as outstanding oral and written communication skills, and will demonstrate a record of superior task-management and follow-through. Preferred knowledge of campus human resources (including HRS), budgetary and finance regulations, and sponsored grants management.
The person in this position serves as Department Administrator for the department of Urban and Regional Planning, providing professional administrative leadership under the general supervision of the Department Chair. The Administrator directs and coordinates management of staff in their provision of departmental program support services. The responsibilities include personnel management, staff training, research administration, communication with the UW Foundation, dissemination of information, and the interpretation of rules and regulations on staff policies and procedures for university staff, academic staff, faculty, and graduate student positions. These tasks are performed in collaboration with the departmental Leadership Team to ensure compliance with the policies and procedures of the College and University. The Administrator has oversight of the departmental budget, including the administration of foundation, grant, and trust funds.
This is a complex, high-level administrative position. The Urban and Regional Planning department currently employs faculty, academic staff, university staff, as well as teaching and project assistants, and student hourly assistants. The department has approximately 40 graduate students. The Department of Urban and Regional Planning anticipates merging with another campus department in summer 2017 which will expand the number of students, staff, and faculty to be supported by this position.
