Position Summary:

Under the supervision of the Director of Campus Recreation, the Assistant Director of Fitness Services will be responsible for the direction, planning, organization, supervision, and evaluation of the Rowan University Satellite Fitness Center, staff, fitness/wellness programming, and equipment & facility maintenance. The position provides leadership, oversight, and developmental opportunities to student staff to develop fitness/wellness programs that promote student learning, development, and success.

This position will collaborate with all professional staff of the Recreation Center, but specifically with the Assistant Director, Fitness & Wellness to provide the University with comprehensive and diverse programs to promote and encourage a healthy lifestyle and well being.


  • Directly develop and manage the day to day operation of the 17,000 sq. foot satellite fitness center
  • Implement, promote, and market personal training, small group training, fitness assessments, and instructional programs.
  • Oversee and assist with the development of policies and procedures for fitness area, weight room, personal training, small group training, fitness assessments, and instructional programs with a particular emphasis on risk management.
  • Plan special events around health, fitness, and wellness topics relative to student growth and development.
  • Maintain records, prepare and analyze statistical reports, evaluations, participant surveys, assessments, and data.
  • Evaluate program participant numbers and satisfaction surveys for programs.
  • Research and recommend weight room, cardiovascular, and other fitness equipment.
  • Recruit, hire, train, schedule, supervise and evaluate fitness area assistants, personal trainers, and other fitness instructors
  • Educate and supervise student staff in scheduling and monitoring fitness assessments with clients.
  • Maintain a high level of accessibility to students and external partners while responding in an appropriate and timely manner to questions, concerns, requests, and feedback.
  • Troubleshoot minor repairs for fitness equipment and report necessary fitness equipment repairs for inspection and maintenance.
  • Develop comprehensive risk management policies for fitness area, weight room, and programs.
  • Manage protocols for emergency response for injuries and incidents.
  • Coordinate weekly facility maintenance inspections and input of necessary work orders.
  • Assist supervision of fitness center building managers and main office student staff
  • Assist supervision of custodial/housekeeping operations and report to Assistant Director of Facilities any issues.
  • Design programs to increase access to participation by members of underrepresented groups.
  • Collaborate with other departments and student organizations to create inclusive programs that promote and celebrate diversity.
  • Stay current with best practices and network with colleagues via professional associations to ensure the quality of the fitness facility and programs offered.

  • Required Qualifications:

    Required qualifications include a Master’s degree in health fitness, recreation, physical education, sport management or related field, one (1) year of professional experience (Two (2) years graduate assistant equivalent) in the fitness or recreation field, demonstrated experience in developing and implementing fitness programs, policies and procedures, and staff training and development. CPR/1st Aid/AED certification. National Fitness Training Certification for Personal Training from the American Council on Exercise (ACE), the American College of Sports Medicine (ACSM), the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) or equivalent. Must be able to lift 50 lbs.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Master’s Degree with two years professional experience in the collegiate fitness or strength & conditioning setting. Experience supervising fitness staff, group fitness, small group training, or personal training staff, programming fitness activities, and developing large-scale fitness/wellness initiatives. Experience working with Olympic Lifting and large multi-functional systems (Precor Queenax/Life Fitness Synergy). Certifications in group fitness and CPR/1st Aid instructor certified. Active in IHRSA, NIRSA or other fitness industry associations.
