DESCRIPTION:

Reporting to the Associate Dean of Students for Academic Success, the Assistant Dean of Students for Health, Wellness, and Case Management contributes to the creation of a healthy positive campus environment that supports students’ physical and mental health and wellness. 

The Assistant Dean will assist in assessment of the health and wellness needs of the campus and create programming designed to address identified areas of need and aspirational goals. S/he will be a visible and approachable presence on campus by participating in some after-hours programs, events and training sessions to forge relationships with students.

The Assistant Dean also coordinates, develops, and implements a case management system with a primary focus on supporting students through challenges, connecting them to campus and community resources, promoting growth in self-advocacy, and empowering students to navigate towards their own solutions. 

The Assistant Dean serves as the primary liaison to the Claremont Colleges Consortium resources including Monsour Counseling & Psychological Services, Health Education Outreach, and Health Services and serves as an on call resource for mental health crises. 

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Health and Wellness:
• Assist with the ongoing assessment of the College’s health and wellness needs. 
• Utilize best practices and frameworks (i.e. Health Campus 2020) in development of initiatives.
• Assist with the design and implementation of the incoming student orientation programs related to health and wellness.
• Work collaboratively with College departments such as Athletics, Recreation, and Roberts Pavilion staff, Title IX, Dean of Students, Dean of Faculty, and others.
• Work closely with and serve as CMC liaison to Claremont Consortium Health Education Outreach and Health Services. 
• Provide relevant training sessions and outreach materials for faculty, students, residence halls, Resident Assistants, First Year Guides and other constituencies.
• Participate in policy and committee discussions on issues related to health and wellness including alcohol, substance use, disordered eating, depression, anxiety, stress management, healthy relationships, etc. 
• Partner with Health Education Outreach to amplify their impact and link students to their programs and services. 

Case Management:
• Provide intake for, meet directly with, and develop a supportive action plan for students experiencing medical, mental health, family emergencies, or other circumstances that may impact academic and interpersonal success. 
• Develop a portfolio of campus and community resources as referral options for students. 
• Work closely with and serve as CMC liaison to Monsour Counseling and Psychological Services. 
• Track and monitor students of concern and maintain real time case records.
• Serve as first responder and intake person for students in crisis
• Conduct mediation processes and utilize restorative practices to assist students of concern with family members, roommates, teammates, classmates, etc. 
• Respond to consultation requests from faculty, staff, students, and parents and facilitate appropriate action plans. 
• Develop a Case Management Team/Behavioral Intervention Team to identify and articulate student trends and best practices. 
• Convene weekly case management meetings and create and provide summary reports 
• Create and deliver training materials and workshops for College departments and programs to help staff and faculty recognize signs of distress and address the needs of students in crisis
• Review existing policies and protocols for assessment and intervention, leaves of absences, returns from leaves, and other related areas. 
• Assist students with leave of absence, work with appropriate procedures and resources/requirements for return after leave.
• Utilize institutional data to inform development of services, programs and interventions.
• Stay abreast of national trends, best practices, and literature related to student success and academic transitions, mental health, federal regulations including Title IX, ADA. 
• Serve on various CMC and Claremont University Consortium (CUC) groups and attend standing meetings such as the Case Managers from all of the Claremont Colleges, CMC’s On-Call Deans weekly meeting, and others as appropriate. 
• Serve as a real-time consultant to the on call Deans when they encounter mental health crisis. 

Education: 
Master’s degree in Social Work, Psychology, Psy.D., Counseling or related social/behavioral science filed, Health Advancement/Prevention, Student Affairs/Higher Education, or related field required. 

Experience: 
Minimum of 3 years of experience, preferably working with college students. Previous experience in crisis management, on-call duties, counseling, case management, and/or health outreach, preferred. A commitment to promoting a proactive and interactive approach to health and wellness in the college setting.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: 
Individual must have knowledge of case management models, health and wellness education and prevention strategies, crisis management coordination, student mental health issues, and understand the needs of special populations. 

Individual must have superior interpersonal skills, ability to build rapport, collaboration skills, familiarity with the principles and limitations of confidentiality. 

Must demonstrate the ability to use tact and exercise a high level of discretion when dealing with confidential and sensitive matters. 

Must be self-motivated and comfortable working with minimal direction. Individual must have proven ability to prioritize concerns, and respond accordingly using sound judgement. 

Must be able to work cooperatively with others and must be able to receive and respond appropriately to constructive criticism. Must display a positive attitude. 

Must be able to operate computers with basic Microsoft Office software (such as Word, Excel, Outlook, Access, and PowerPoint) and any associated professional and/ or department specific software.

Licenses: 
Valid driver’s license and the ability to be insured under the College’s authorized driver’s policy. 

Hours: 
The regular hours for this position are 8:00 am to 5:00 pm. Hours may vary due to needs of the College or department. Some evening and weekend work is required. A willingness to maintain a flexible work schedule in order to be available for emergency consultation and planned programming during off hours.

Classification and Status: 
This is a full-time, 12-month, exempt level, benefits-eligible position.
