Position Summary: The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Library seeks a knowledgeable, motivated, and collaborative individual for the position of Special Collections Cataloger to perform original and complex adaptive cataloging of rare and specialized materials in the Wilson Library. The Special Collections Cataloger will provide bibliographic control and metadata related to rare and specialized published materials in the Louis Round Wilson Special Collections Library. The Special Collections Cataloger will create both original and complex adaptive cataloging for multiple formats, including monographs, newspapers, maps, serials, music and audiovisual material, and will perform catalog management and authority control activities. Cataloging is performed to national standards, with participation in the NACO, BIBCO, CONSER and SACO programs.
Education Requirements: ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree.
Qualification and Experience: REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: ALA-accredited Master's degree in library or information science, or a related advanced degree. Minimum two years' professional experience with rare book cataloging in an academic or research library setting. Working knowledge of online library systems and national standards (e.g., AACR2r, RDA, DCRM, LCSH, LC Classification, MARC21 formats). Experience with the principles of authority control. Reading knowledge of at least one western European language other than English. Ability to handle citations and title pages in a wide range of Western European languages. Effective organizational and interpersonal skills. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Strong attention to detail. Demonstrated ability to work independently as well as cooperatively and flexibly with a wide variety of staff in a rapidly changing environment, and demonstrated commitment to working in teams. Commitment to a high level of service to faculty, staff, and students. Active participation in appropriate professional organizations. PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Fluency in French, Spanish, or other western European languages. Reading knowledge of Latin or Greek. Experience with: NACO, BIBCO, or other PCC programs; electronic cataloging support tools, such as RDA Toolkit, Classification Web and Cataloger's Desktop; experience cataloging serials and electronic resources. Familiarity with non-MARC metadata standards.
