The Office of Research Administration (ORA) provides pre-award and post-award administrative services for sponsored projects at all UM campuses. ORA works in close collaboration with central, campus and departmental offices to help ensure the overall effective coordination of research administration services, systems, policies, and processes. The Sr. Grant Accountant has direct responsibility for the management of the budgets and compliance for all government grants and contracts while providing grant accounting services for awards made by sponsors and also provides financial management services for the Office of Research Administration and Sponsored Programs. The incumbent will be required to assist with preparation of budgets and forecasts for department and individual grants. This individual will analyze and monitor accounts to ensure the fiscal aspects comply with regulations. The Sr. Grant Accountant will manage the general ledger and will be responsible for entering any adjustments or reclassifications. The incumbent will maintain and balance subsidiary accounts by verifying, allocating, posting, reconciling transactions; resolving discrepancies in conjunction with summarizing financial status by collecting information; preparing and analyzing monthly, quarterly financial reports comparing budget to actual and reconciling variances. This individual will participate in audit preparations by providing answers to auditor's questions; and formulate responses and action plans for audit findings as well as partake in meetings with staff, sub recipients, auditors and grantors. Reviewing and reconciling expenditures, revenues, payroll, accruals and cost allocations to verify in compliance with regulations will be essential. This individual will be responsible for taking initiative to investigate discrepancies, interpret regulations and policies, provide recommendations based on sound accounting practices, and apply resolutions as appropriate as well as perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Requirements are as follows: Bachelor’s Degree or any appropriate combination of relevant work experience and/or education will be considered. Minimum of four years management experience in Sponsored Programs Administration or related field. University Research Administration experience is highly preferred. Knowledge of federal and state laws, regulations, and policies related to research administration. Ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally as well as the capability to work well under pressure in an environment with deadlines. Must be able to translate and summarize numbers into understandable narrative to others. Comprehensive knowledge of policies and issues related to sponsored projects administration in an institution of higher learning is necessary.
