Physical/Natural Science Instructor (Fresno City College)

Essential Functions:
  • Teach classes in physical science and natural science;

  • Use a variety of pedagogies, and integrate educational technologies into classroom and laboratory instruction;

  • Teach extended day, evening classes, and online/hybrid classes as assigned;

  • Develop course curriculum;

  • Serve on college and district committees;

  • Develop and assess student learning outcomes and using the results to improve teaching and student learning;

  • Administer program budgets;

  • Participate in program review and curriculum development through association with other disciplines on campus;

  • Assist and advise the department chair and division dean in course scheduling;

  • Take part in campus and district participatory governance structures and assignments;

  • Assist in the advancement of the institutional mission and goals; and

  • Fulfill the duties and responsibilities of instructors as required by Administrative Regulation 7122.


Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s in the interdisciplinary area; OR
  • Master’s in one of the disciplines included in the interdisciplinary area and upper division or graduate course work in at least one other constituent discipline; OR
  • Bachelor’s in the interdisciplinary area AND at least two years professional experience related to the interdisciplinary area; OR
  • A valid California Community College Credential; OR
  • The equivalent education and/or experience (requires an equivalency).

    Interdisciplinary area: Physical Sciences, Natural Science.
    Constituent disciplines: Physics/Astronomy, Chemistry.

    All candidates must have demonstrated sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, gender identity, sexual orientation, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.


Desirable Qualifications:
  • Education and related work experience in teaching physical science and natural science;
  • Ability to design and implement innovative teaching methodologies;
  • Demonstrated commitment to interacting and working successfully as a team with science instructors, laboratory technicians, and other colleagues;
  • Enthusiasm for teaching and assisting students to succeed;
  • Ability to develop curriculum in emerging areas of physical and natural science;
  • Capacity to contribute to the total operation of the instructional program including department, division, and college responsibilities;
  • Ability to adapt instructional techniques to accommodate varied learning styles and a variety of teaching modalities including distance learning; and
  • Knowledge of college’s missions and goals.


Conditions of Employment:
177 duty days per year.

Salary and Benefits:
Starting salary is $54,029 - $81,342 based on education and experience. A doctoral stipend of $2,021 is available. In addition, the District offers an attractive fringe benefit package including medical, dental, and vision coverage for the employee and dependents, and life insurance. Employees are also members of the California State Teachers’ Retirement System (CalSTRS).

Selection Procedure:
Applications will be screened to determine which applicants meet the minimum qualifications as stated in the job announcement. From the applicants who meet the minimum qualifications and who have submitted all the required documents, a selection committee will determine the candidates who are best qualified based on the minimum and desirable qualifications. They will be invited to interview. The selection committee will rate responses to the interview questions, teaching demonstration and writing prompt (if applicable). Based on this rating, a small number of applicants will be selected as the “recommended candidates”. These candidates will be forwarded to the Vice President of Instruction and College President for final interviews. A hiring recommendation will be made by the College President and forwarded to the Board of Trustees of State Center Community College District for final approval.
